Having had Portuguese Kale Soup before from a Portuguese friend of mine, and having made the recipe myself (it's a really big deal, many ingredients) I fell in love with it. I literally could not stop eating that soup. Then I tried it at Alexis when a friend treated me to lunch. I was gobsmacked and speechless at what was set before me. It looked like a bowl of weak chicken soup with a few pieces of sausage and kale floating in it. I was so underwhelmed I spoke to the owner and described the contrast between what I had made and what he was serving. I insinuated that he should try the recipe I made. I said, "Your place would be really busy for lunch by the people showing up just to get this soup. I said I'd bring him a bowl. Bottom line: not interested. "Really, why?" I said. "Because this is an old family recipe. From my mother-in-law." OK. I know how *that* is. I sighed heavily and left, probably never to return.

I've tried nearly everything on the menu over the 10 years I've been going to this restaurant. I've never had a complaint on the flavor of the food. The guests I bring enjoy trying the authentic food. I would recommend bringing large groups as most nights are quiet and the atmosphere is perfect for a slow paced social meal. I'm on the fence about removing one star for the hours the restaurant is open. They close between lunch and dinner and close dinner a little too early.
