After a fifteen year struggle with major depression, alcoholism, self mutilation and eating disorders, I finally found the place that was right for me. I had been through two other treatment centers, psych units and hospitalizations. No one seemed able to help me. 12 step programs did not work, regular medication did not work. I and my family had all but given up. After two weeks at Malibu Horizon I finally got to meet with Dr. Javaherian. She assessed the situation and said, "It looks like you're just trying to feel better. I'm going to up your antidepressant." I thought, oh my god, why didn't anyone think of that? Nine months later, I am doing great. I feel like the person I was always meant to be. The staff treated me like an intelligent human being instead of dismissing me as an "addict" and "crazy" like so many twelve step focused programs. I believe the knowledgeable staff and the dual diagnosis approach are what made this place the one that saved my life. While many of the patients there would kick and scream and flaunt the rules, and there was no shortage of controversy, I believe it was all in the struggle against addiction and mental illness. Anger, blame and projection are all part of that struggle. The staff were nothing but courteous and respectful to me, even going above and beyond when I asked them to. If you come here with a desire to feel better and a determination to stay focused on yourself, letting distractions be just that, then you will succeed. You CAN feel better than you ever thought possible. Be open and honest in all of your dealings and always with yourself. Thank you MH. Thank you Dr. Javaherian. You saved my life, at least. Don't mind the vitriol; haters gonna hate. Sincerely Andrea

I got to Malibu horizons on November 16th, 2012. I had tried traditional 12 step rehab before, but quickly relapsed. I truly feel this center saved my life. Dr. Mohammed was the first doctor to treat my major depressive disorder correctly and helped me attain sobriety from an opiate addiction. The therapists there are top notch, along with the nurses. The groups offer incredible insight an tools I use on a daily basis. Dr. Mohammed has put together an amazing science based life saving treatment center. I owe my life to this amazing place!!

After a fairly serious back injury at work which left me needing surgery and in constant pain. I became addicted to opiates. Not a traditional drug addiction but one that caused me many problems, including the break up of my marriage. Had it not been for Malibu Horizon I would probably still be addicted. I was given cognitive therapy and began to realise for myself how my addiction was affecting me and everyone I knew. Thanks to all Doctors, therapists and staff at Malibu Horizon for helping me through this traumatic experience.

The review with such a horrible report does not recognize any of the program that is provided by Malibu Horizon. Nearly all, if not all, facilities of this type, as well as 12 step facilities have the same complaints. It is not unusual for a case to be settled out of court, nor does it confirm substantiation of the claim or guilt on either side. The care I received, from the welcome at the airport, transportation, initial check in and assessment, orientation to the house, therapy, group, CBT, DBT, MET, process and recovery groups - all have empowered me to become the healing person I am now. No other, and I mean NO OTHER, group or program out there provides the dual diagnosis approach in quite this way. (no other than the ones I have been exposed to) I, the client, have been given a new lease on life. I am empowered to make the changes, recognize my states of well being, and - best of all, use the tools and skills I learned to maintain my healing, ability to recognize irrational from mindful and accurate thoughts and feeling, and sobriety. Don't let anyone tell you differently, WE have the ability to manage ourselves, WE have control over our disease, WE can maintain abstinence with continued support (healty support) and right minded people. I am not condemned to being labeled as a "selfish alcoholic who cannot expect to ever manage my disease or be released from it without complete submission to another or a higher power." Let me tell you, those (AA) people need to get a life outside their cult. Sorry, but listening to that garbage is destructive, mentally, physically, and emotionally. AA does nothing to continue relapse prevention or recovery. AA does not continue education, review, or meetings that encourage futher developkment of mindfulness tools, self awareness, questioning thoughts and feelings, encourage the continued practice of sitting with your emotions rather than acting on them / reacting, rather than responding appropriately. AA is nothing but an archaic, religion conceived organization that does NOT embrace the medical community nor the disease status of substance use/abuse. AA refuses to join the present and accept the dual diagnosis, underlying issues or other disorders that may prompt one to abuse in an effort to self medicate. I am not a sneaky selfish woman sith only thoughts for myself just because I attempted to inappropriately block memories and find refuge. I am now a healty woman with hope, a future, skills, a therapist and psychiatrist who are wonderful and treating both my underlying issues and my substance abuse history. It was only the keen assessment and extensive experience of Dr. Manget as well as the other therapists in the program, that allowed me to open up in a comfortable and cared for setting and examine my underlying symptoms. If only the substance abuse community and lobby would stop mandating AA 12 steps as the only "punishment" for use. Maybe when there is real acknowledgement by the substance abuse lobby, will America finally see substantial reduction of users. By the way, while numbers cannot be solidly given due to the AA annon. policy, it is estimated, even though AA's studies, since 1964 mind you, that they only have a 17% success rate, "newcomers" leave in droves because the "program - hey my brain was washed but it needed to be washed - can you say cult or religion) the "program" retains all of the original religious components, and you are never to question, evaluate for yourself. You are supposed to "just give it a year, fake it till you make it, you will come to believe in a higher power that is the only source of redemption and is the only one who can heal you, turn it all over to your higher power and he/she will make it right for you." Malibu Horizon teaches skills, communication awareness and skills, community skills - interaction in a healthy way with others, and provides the needed 1:1 therapy with a primary therapist as well as the group program. This program really worked a miracle for me.
