For what it is - its awesome. I like to grab a cheap beer at the small dive bar attached to the restaurant during happy hour and sit out on the back patio.

Had dinner at the "new" Chavo last night. Uninspired would be a generous way to put it. Exceptionally bland is another way of describing the food, chicken tacos, -bland , soggy chile relleno -bland, The Yellowtail ceviche in fresh young coconut looked and sounded great but lacked flavor and yellowtail. The Octopus ceviche was very good and the cocktails were tasty but what a let down and pricey too.

I hadn't been since it re-opened and was impressed overall. The food was delicious. A huge step up from the old El Chavo which was just average Mexican fare. Now they have delicious ceviche, oysters, etc. Service was lacking but the staff is new so hopefully they will improve and they made up for it by giving us a round of shots and complimentary desserts. A welcome addition to the neighborhood.

My first visit back to El Chavo since they re-launched was one of very mixed feelings. El Chavo had always been a favorite spot to meet friends for Tequila, Margarita's and pretty good Mexican food. I was hoping that the place had maintained its funky neighborhood feel after its re-launch and I was a little bit disappointed in that regard. The place looks nice and is a bit cleaned up (not that it was dirty before...just need some cosmetic help) but somewhere in the remodel of the interior it seemed to lose some of that funky neighborhood feel it had. I can't quite put my finger on it but neither myself or my friends felt as comfortable or "at home" as we had felt on prior visits (before the shutdown and re-launch). The drinks are still potent though. The food was always good to pretty good and it is still good although none of us were excited about any one dish. Still, something just wasn't the same. If you have never been here in the past that will not matter to you and the strong drinks and decent Mexican food should be a reason to give this place a try. If you are a regular customer that goes back a few years or so, you might just feel like the spark has gone out in this once lively, fun and funky neighborhood hangout. Maybe my friends and I were expecting a little more after the re-launch though. It is probably worth finding out for yourself. You never know, you may like the new El Chavo. I feel as if I lost an old friend though.
