I worked in the post op CCU back in 1989. At that time, at least, it was the premier cardiac surgery hospital in the Western US. Every night, I spent 12 hours weaning post op patients from their ventilators, which was pretty easy as the anesthesiologists were as superb as the surgeons. While I was there, we never lost a post op cardiac patient, not one. It wasn’t the cleanest or most modern of hospitals, but we did excellent work. Now it’s gone for good. The oldest hospital in LA, the only place I’d want to have a triple bypass, now gone due to incompetent management. It’ll probably wind up as another high cost apartment complex, of which LA has too many already.

I visited the US in July of 2012 to take part at the World Championships of Performing arts when I contracted Appendicitis and was rushed to St. Vincent Medical Center for examination. The medical staff was very friendly and explained the procedure very clearly and was very helpful even though we are South African and was very unsure if the travel insurance will cover the medical costs. The next morning I was in the OR for an emergency appendectomy performed by the great Dr. Charles Hunter. Even though the hospital doesn’t admit child patients, they were willing to assist me, then 15 year-old, in this unique case seeing that my appendicitis had already cause abscesses in my abdominal area and seeing that we are foreign. Dr. Hunter signed my release forms 1 day before our return flights with letter stating the medicine with which I was discharged, giving clear evidence of the reasons for me flying with such high dosages of Vicodin and antibiotics. Great service and friendly nursing staff.
