We visited on a Saturday and our pup had the best time ever! There was a constant rotation of dogs coming and going and there was plenty of space for the pups to run freely and chase each other. Plenty of places for people to sit and a water feature was present for the pups to hydrate. There's a smaller area dedicated to the very small dogs. Overall we were very pleased and will retire in the future! Dog-friendliness: There were no aggressive dogs and the owners were very attentive to their pups behavior.

It's the world's first dog park, or so the sign claims.Like most things related to Berkeley, there's a certain shabbiness to the park itself and the way some of the people and their dogs don't get along in uniquely awkward ways. But unlike most things related to and/or sanctioned by the City of Berkeley, at least in the past few years under the current certifiably grossly incompetent city council and mayor, the dog park also does a good job of serving its civic purpose without also simultaneously being an extreme waste of taxpayer dollars and/or a complete circus. The big banner encouraging people to stop their dogs from continuously barking throughout the day makes me nervous. No, not because it makes me think of incessant barking, but because I don't really understand what they're trying to do. Are they asking people to keep their dogs from barking while at the dog park? In my experience, dogs don't do a whole lot of barking at dog parks. Are they trying to encourage people to bring their dogs to the dog park in order to prevent the dogs from disturbing the neighbors where the dogs live? If so, why is the banner so scolding, and which neighborhood is it referring to, the neighborhood where the dog lives, or the neighborhood of the dog park?Of course, I know the answer to all these questions, and that's what makes me nervous. Some idiots clearly haven't trained their dogs, and they (the idiots) allow them (the dogs) to bark all the time, whether at "home" or in the dog park. Instead of actually doing anything that would actually prevent someone from disturbing the peace like, say, issuing citations, someone went to the cost and trouble of printing and hanging this obnoxious, passive-aggressive banner, which will accomplish exactly nothing, because people who are antisocial enough not to prevent their dogs from barking at all times surely aren't in the habit of paying attention to signs. And the banner is also a kind of an admission that maybe the site of the dog park isn't ideal, but it's the first in the world, so of course nothing will be done about that. (And just based on how much money the City of Berkeley wastes on stupid programs, I'm glad they're not moving the dog park, because doing so would probably cost millions of dollars, be met with lawsuits that would take years and cost more millions to settle, and would probably end up being much worse than the status quo.)I do love watching dogs play. And it was so fun and surprising that very first time I randomly came across it.
