@Justin Judd Bill Mollison found the big swale in 1986 (video on youtube) He had the ccc documents with him to point out the mounds.. Trees were already tall.. same rich humus soil as when Geoff Lawton visited 20 or so years later...

Hard to locate precisely. But it seems over nearly a century, those swales have had such a wide positive impact that a very wide region is green & lush compared to the surrounding sandy desert. After some walking around I was able to find the large mounds that those CCC folks layed out nearly 100 years ago. Those guys were so far ahead of their times in understanding repairative earthworks. Only if we had such consciousness presidents like FDR these days.

Not to burst your bubble but, this is not a century old CCC Swale. "The United States Bureau of Reclamation implemented mitigation efforts in the late 1980s to address the problem of restrictions to animal movement caused by the Tucson Aqueduct-Phase B of the CAP canal system.... spent about $6.2 million for land acquisition, construction of crossings, and addition of water catchments for the Wildlife Mitigation Corridor." Popowski, Ronald J., and Paul R. Krausman. "Use of Crossings over the Tucson Aqueduct by Selected Mammals." The Southwestern Naturalist 47.3 (2002): 363-71. Web.
