I was admitted to the Emergency Room on Friday afternoon for dehydration and was quickly shown into a unit and attended to by a nurse. Over-all, the nursing staff was excellent, other than one nurse who ordered a finger-stick for diabetes because I had "fruity breath" when actually by blood sugar was quite low. There were some minor glitches, probably due to the fact that it was Friday night but I can never understand why businesses don't staff according to predictable peak-load times. But the very, very serious and potentially dangerous fact is that the STAFF, ORDERLIES AND NURSES, DID NOT REGULARLY CHECK MY IDENTIFICATION, neither verbally nor, more securely, by looking at the plastic bracelet that they had attached to my left wrist. Once, an orderly came in to wheel me off for an ultra-sound. Luckily, the name that I thought I heard him murmur as he pulled the aside the curtain was not mine and I called him on it. Another time a woman poked her head in my cubicle to ask about a procedure and my nurse responded that it wasn't right; the first woman said, "oh, it must be for another patient." I was not in pain, nor was I under any medication that dulled my awareness. I shudder to think what might happen to someone who was not aware of what was being done to them-the possibilities for major errors is terrifying. If you have to go to this emergency room, I suggest that you, if at all possible, insist that everyone verify your wrist-tag identity, and even that you ask to see the written order for a procedure before allowing anything to be done to you. OTHERWISE, YOU COULD BE PLACING YOURSELF IN GRAVE DANGER.
