image Though cultural events are best experienced in-person, and the Hungarian Cultural Association has been organizing some of the best in Phoenix, this past year I came to appreciate the organization’s versatility while dealing with social distancing. I took part in a few of their Community Tuesday meetups through Zoom, where the organizers brought speakers, cultural events, and discussions about some of the most pressing issues we are facing. The discussions about the COVID-19 and the various vaccines with immunologist Dr Gabor Szalai and epidemiologist Dr Kati Maharry helped me understand much more about the virus we’ve been dealing with in the past year. Considering all the conflicting news we’ve been seeing all over the media about this virus, I felt these discussions were extremely valuable. And these were only two of many online events organized by the association. Another highlight for me was the virtual Farsang celebration, with a special guest from the Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj, ethnographer Vilmos Keszeg, Ph.D., who helped us appreciate our tradition. Even keeping it all online, the Association held all the usual celebrations, coming up with innovative ideas to make them all enjoyable even in the virtual world. While hoping to get back to in-person activities soon, the Association kept the community together even during these hard times. I am extremely impressed with everything the Association does for the Hungarian community and everyone interested in our culture.

image Out of the events offered by the Hungarian community in Arizona, I can say that I liked the events organized by the HCAP best. There are other organizations, like churches, but the events give you the feeling that you are at a senior living home. Everything is outdated, the music is unenjoyable, and even though the food might be good, I just wasn't able to enjoy these events. In comparison HCAP is like a breath of fresh air. It is a young and vibrant community. They don't just serve good food, that reminds me of my childhood, but offer something that can be enjoyed and understood by all ages. They focus on many layers of the culture and present it in a way that is not boring to those either who are more familiar with the culture and its traditions. I love the performers that they brought so far, I love it that I can see many young couples with children at their events. Csak igy tovabb! (I hope I said it right). You guys are doing a great job!

image (Translated by Google) Every time we were present at an event, my husband and I had a great time. HCAP offers valuable programs, a really small oasis here in Phoenix, for those who want to preserve their Hungarianness. The organizers and all helpers work with heart and soul to create quality events. The Napocska Hungarian School is also an excellent place where our grandson can not only learn Hungarian, but also become a member of a larger "Hungarian family". We can only recommend this association and thank you for all the hard work the organizers put into this association.
We wholeheartedly recommend this organization. All of the events that we attended were amazing and of great quality. Very well organized. The food was amazing! We also love to take our granddaughter to the Napocska Hungarian School where she not only learns Hungarian, but she will learn what does it mean to belong to a community, to a bigger "Hungarian family".

image My family and I have attended two events hosted by the Hungarian Cultural Association, and we had a wonderful time at both of them. The food is amazing—authentic homemade meals and desserts. I also like how they offer activities for all ages to enjoy—crafts, dancing, archery and more. It is a great opportunity to learn more about Hungarian and European history and culture, as they share poetry, music, authentic clothing and traditional holiday celebrations. Everyone is very warm, friendly and welcoming (and it’s ok if you don’t speak Hungarian!). We look forward to their next event.
