image There are many things that are attractive about Family Tree Dental. The staff is on the whole friendly. The office is beautiful and comforting in color and tone, and, let's be honest, the staff is just as attractive. They are warm and human in their approach and (with the exception of pushing patients to agree to the most costly of procedures) seem very capable.
But looks can definitely be deceiving.
In 2010 I visited FTD for the first time. We began with a cleaning and counseling on what they suggested would be a good and thorough dental plan. The first priority was a root canal needed on the bottom right side of my mouth. I was referred to a specialist for the actual root canal. Once that was done I returned to the office for the crown.
After receiving the crown I experienced a great deal of discomfort mainly in the form of extreme pressure that seemed to come from beneath the work they did. When I spoke to them about it I was told that that was normal. Believing I was in the hands of true professionals I took them at their word. But the discomfort has never gone away.
About two years later I returned as a patient and when I expressed (for about the third time) how much pain and discomfort I was still experiencing I was told again that there was no problem and everything looked good.
Finding this suspicious, I visited a different dentist a couple of months ago. When I described the discomfort to the new dentist I was shown ex rays which indicated that the build up underneath the crown was poorly done which causes the pressure and what looks to be a very deep infection. Fixing the problem would require a new (and extremely expensive) re treatment. How expensive? Well, it would cost more than the original root canal itself. Those of us who have had root canals know the serious hit the pocket book takes.
I contacted FTD again and explained what the new provider had told me. I was asked for the tooth number and the phone number of the new office and was told that Holly Lerma would contact them to discuss and confirm what they had been told by me.
Two weeks went by without a response so I contacted my new Doctor's office to inquire as to whether or not they had been contacted. They had not been. Immediately upon hearing this, I e-mailed Missy with a follow up. This was over 8 weeks ago and I've never received a response.
It will now cost me $1800 + to have the shoddy work corrected. What good is a dentist if the work they do will only result in costly corrections by other providers?
You will be treated kindly by the staff (with the exception of a hygienist who told another member of my household that they didn't have a kissable mouth) and may even feel like "family" to them, However, their kindness does not make up for a less than stellar (and potentially dangerous) work product.
I wish them the best. But after all of this, not only would I not recommend them as a provider, but I would go so far as to discourage anyone I personally know from giving business to a sweet natured but incompetent staff.
