This is the gift shop/restaurant/dock for the Riverboat Discovery. After our cruise on the Riverboat Discovery (see that review for details) we were dropped off here with time to eat (& shop) before boarding our buses for the next stop. The gift shop was nice, it had a variety of items inside. We stepped inside the 40 below room and immediatly knew we would never survive a winter in Alaska. This room alone is what is giving this review more than one star. We decided to eat at the Discovery Dining Hall where a lunch of Miner's Stew, Roasted Vegetables and other items were on the menu. First I have to say this was served family style with strangers crammed together onto bench seating. So not only were you eating next to people you did not know, you had to share serving utensils with everyone at the table - which included foods you eat with your hands (bread, corn on the cob). In the era of covid, when we are all on vacation (EVERYONE eating here is not from Alaska) this seemed like a very bad idea. We are all bringing our germs with us and very quickly sharing them amongst ourselves. Had we understood this was a family style meal involving strangers we would have made a different choice. Also the food was not good. A can of Dinty Moore would have been a better stew than this.

This was one of my favorite activities during our week in Fairbanks. The boat is wonderful, the reindeer delightful and the Alaskan village was educational and fun!
