I hired Donny and his crew to remove asphalt and concrete and replace with new concrete and asphalt at my daughters house in Anchorage in September of 2020. I have been in construction for 40 years and I know the rights and wrongs of concrete work. I was VERY specific with him in both emails and texting about what I wanted. Before I signed the contract and agreed on one change to add more work for a price, we discussed everything about the project. Before he shook my hand and signed the contract he also promised me he would NOT start my project and then leave it unfinished to leave to go do other projects. It was 21 days later when he finished. It was so bad that when the neighbor 3 doors down walked down to ask him about doing something for them, he stopped my job and went down the street and did their concrete. His MO is to do the work when the homeowner is not here so he can cut corners and not do the work correctly. After he figured out I knew what I was talking about he quit coming to the house while I was in town. I live in Fairbanks, so this made for a difficult situation to get him to do what he had agreed to do. This is a very long story of all the problems we had with this company. It is so far beyond what I can post in this review. It would take to much space to explain all of the problems we had with them. One of the larger problems is he did not slope the concrete away from the house! There are 2 major areas that have water pooling at the side of the house/garage. That is a basic requirement with concrete and drainage. The problem with concrete is if it isn't correct the only way to fix it is to remove it and start over. The back of the house is a disaster. They made a mistake and tried to fix it by skimming over it with a mortar mix. Then he tried to blame the problem on us. It took about 15 days before that started cracking and flaking away. This spring it is a horrible mess. There is a very large spot that puddles right in front of the back door. They left a mess on everything. They never bothered to protect anything from getting concrete on it. Even the neighbors property. Not all of the work was bad. The front of the house looks good and is sloped correctly. Donny and his crew were always cordial and they did haul away some debris for us at no extra charge. The driveway paving gets a 3 out 0f 5 stars. I would NEVER hire this company again. Buyer Beware. Update: Still have not contacted us to resolve the court ordered judgement against this company. The lack of professionalism is stunning. We contracted with Eua of AK to replace our driveway and front walkway. Although the it looked nice initially, both the driveway and walkway cracked in several places over the first Winter and the driveway heaved upwards about 4" next to the garage door. This created a 4" differential between the driveway and garage floor and the rising concrete damaged the garage door frame. We asked that they come back and correct the problems, but their solution was to "offer" to fix it for an additional $4K. When we refused, they indicated they would "See us in Court". Well, we did take them to small claims court (Alaska 3rd District Court Case #3AN-19-01478SC). The owner counter-filed stating that the person that did the work was NOT authorized to use his business license to do the work and he was not responsible. This is interesting because we met with the owner several times, we paid Eua of Alaska Concrete for the work that was done, the checks were cashed, and the owner came to our house at the end of the project to present the final invoice. The owner did not show up for the court date, and after hearing the evidence from us and a 3rd party professional engineer, the judge agreed with our claim and found in our favor. The engineer explained that Eua of Alaska used poor material as the base for the driveway and as the base froze during the winter, it expanded and lifted the driveway. Their was too much organic material in the base layer which holds water that expands when frozen. The base should have been D1 which is basically rock with gaps between the gravel pieces to absorb any expansion that may occur. The company was sent the judgement and order to compensate us $8701. So far we have not received the settlement and have not been contacted to arrange payment to us. So now we have a driveway that is cracked and moves with each season, making it difficult to enter the garage during the winter. The garage door frame is damaged and the front walkway is cracked as well. All we wanted was for them to do the right thing and fix their mistake, but they have fought and delayed us as much as possible and forced us to take legal action. Sad that they have no business ethics or pride in their work. In our investigation, we also found through the State of Alaska that the license this company has does not allow the owner to hire workers and when we asked about their bond, we were told they were not bonded although it stated on their website that they are bonded.Next step is to file a Writ of Execution to place a lien on the company's assets. I am happy to discuss this with anyone that is interested in more details and provide proof of the damage that was done. Our story continues. Have started the process of recovering the court ordered settlement and this company continues to try to delay/block us at every single opportunity. In addition, we have had additional issues with the concrete and brick work that they did and now our front entryway is a hazard to use. Luckily when the step collapsed, the person was not injured. Now we not only have to have the driveway repaired but also the entryway. I can only hope that others may benefit from our experience with both the workmanship and customer service from Eua of Alaska Concrete.
