I suggest you DO NOT USE these people to close your home purchase!! We purchased our home on Sept. 1, 2020 and Blair Parsons closed it. We are almost 70 years old and have been exempt from property taxes for several years. Before closing, they were clearly informed of that fact. This was during the pandemic so everyone was still under extreme cautions. In addition to that, I had just taken my last chemo treatment 2 weeks before closing and was very weak and sick. I was not able to even go inside the building due to such a weak immune system so they had to bring the papers to the vehicle for us to sign. I cannot imagine why, but they had filled out a claim for HOMESTEAD exemption and when they rushed the paperwork out to us, they just said they had filed the tax exemption affidavit and I did not catch the fact that it was a HOMESTEAD exemption so I made no further arrangement to file a tax exemption. A couple of weeks or so ago, I got a bill for $380 for property taxes!!! When I called the tax office, I was informed of what they had done and told that it has happened numerous times. HOMESTEAD exemption is for those who still file a tax return and it REDUCES the tax amount for property where you live. We needed a TAX Exemption, not Homestead exemption! We would have been much better off if they had NOT FILED it period!! Then we would have known to file it ourselves. The tax office told me that they have tried numerous times to get closing attorneys everywhere, to STOP doing that since we are not the first people that has happened to!! We paid these people to do this work and they FAILED to properly represent our best interest!!! When I called their office and politely explained what happened and asked for reimbursement of this unnecessary expense to us, I was told (in a rude, hateful voice) that they could not help me because they could not file the TAX EXEMPTION for us, that we had to do that ourselves. I informed her that I would definitely be doing a review about the situation. That being the case, and they KNEW it; then WHY did they even fill out that form and stick it under our nose to sign, saying they would file it for us???? They did file; they filed the WRONG paperwork!!!! They should NEVER have filed at all! We should have just been informed that we needed to go to the courthouse and file for that exemption. What they filed was completely USELESS!! And what's more, THEY KNEW IT WAS USELESS!!! Their determination to file useless paperwork even after they had been told by the tax office that it was causing this problem has cost us $380 which we cannot afford!!!!!! They will NEVER do any kind of legal business for us again. I suggest if you purchase a home anywhere even close to Pell City, that you insist on using someone else and check to make sure they DO NOT file a HOMESTEAD exemption if you are over age 65 or disabled since you should be EXEMPT from property taxes on you residence!!!
