Just as sweet tea is the champagne of the South, barbecue is its kobe steak. And you don't look for the building with valet parking or a fancy sign or cloth napkins. You search for the kind of places that make you question if they're even open or not. If they are, you're in for a treat. Such a place residues in the small city of Fayette, Alabama (pop. less than 5,000/less than an hour above University of Alabama). Here the paper towel rolls are on the table and the tablecloths are plain and stain resistant. Cups and plates are styrofoam, utensils are plastic. And the food, well you already know after reading thus far. Now I'll go ahead and mention that they do serve a few non-bbq related items; burgers, ham sandwiches, pork chops, and a variety of pies (by the slice). To these, I cannot speak. My order was that of a marathon runner just crossing the finish line. Large pork sandwich plate with okra, green beans, mac n cheese, and sweet tea to wash it all down. I was there with family, but their words and laughs soon faded as I took bite after delicious bite from my plate. I can't prove it, but I am sure there was a period of food coma blindness where my eyes were closed so I could give full attention to the savory meat with its molasses and brown sugar kissed sauce coming across my palette like a holiday gift to my tastebuds. Needless to say I refilled my cup a few times (including for the road) and that proved to be all the dessert I required. I am not in this area often, but I promise that any time I am Lisa's will be a required stop.
