Last Tuesday, April 13th, 2021 I went to New York Jewelers at Brookwood Mall (in Birmingham, Al) to have a battery replaced in my 20 +/- year old Seiko analog watch. I knew it needed replacing because of the built in situation of the second hand skipping every two seconds in order to make me aware the battery is about to die. I asked the lady working there if she could replace the battery and she said she could. I asked how much and she replied $14.99. I said that would be fine and she proceeded to take off the back of the watch and looked around for a replacement battery. At this point she started having trouble and gave the watch back to me with the back off to see if I could solve the problem of it not working. I immediately saw that the second hand was not moving and said “there is a problem! The second hand is not working!” She immediately got defensive, raised her voice and said it was not working when I came in. I kept calm and replied the second hand was working when I came in and there is a problem with the battery installation. She started screaming at me and said it was broken when I brought it in and there was nothing she could do. I replied, “This watch has worked for 20 years and only has needed a new battery every few years. She screamed “That is your truth!” To which I replied, “No, ma’am that is fact.” She then offered to send the watch to her “jeweler” to fix it. I had no choice. My watch I paid several hundred dollars for years ago and had taken great care of was now broken and at her mercy! What was I going to do? I’m thinking, “Worse case scenario I have to go to small claims court and plead my case to a judge but what a hassle would take months if not years!” I waited the few days she promised and got a call on Friday, April 16th, 2021. She said (in a really big hurry) that my watch was ready. I asked how much but she had already hung up at this point. I picked it up that day and was told the price was $25.00. I asked why the watch was broken and what it took to fix and her reply was she didn’t ask the jeweler and didn’t want to know. I paid the $25 ransom to get my (hopefully new battery) watch and will never darken the doors of “New York Jewelry” at Brookwood Mall again! Bottom line, yes I paid $10 more than the asking price to replace the battery at $14.99. That is not a lot of money, But. The principle that her position was: “I didn’t do anything wrong, I didn’t break your watch, It’s not my fault, etc.” didn’t sit well with me. Simply acknowledging there was an issue and working to solve it would have changed my attitude to be willing to maybe pay more if necessary but I’m just glad I didn’t take a much more expensive watch like a Rolex and have the same issues that resulting in hundreds to thousands of dollars. Clearly, she was incompetent and would not admit it. My frustration prompted me to take fifteen minutes out of my schedule and report this so that others will not stumble in to the same mistake and lose much more money than I did.
