Terrible management, Poorly cared for, Overpriced. Felt unsafe and certainly that we were not getting what we paid for.

The location really makes this apartment.  It's near Armory Square and Clinton Square where a few of restaurants are located.  The downfall of this building lies with the office staff and management.  It took over a month to get a lighbulb changed.  Would have changed it ourselves but the lease prohibits that.  The problem isn't with the actual maintenance staff, the issue lies with the office staff who serve as intermediaries between the tenants and he maintenance guys.  If there's something wrong, we are told to call the office and they, at least in theory, relay the message to maintenance.  There is clearly a disconnect between the two groups.  The general state of the apartment is also in question.  Some of the cabinet handles in the kitchen and bathroom are popping off and the floors are damaged in some spots.  When we lived there, one of the window locks was cracked and not functioning.  You can really see the rushed work here.  Security is great, though. You have to key in at least 3 times to get to your floor from outside the building. However, security kind of goes out the window during rooftop events, where people who don't even live here can simply take the stairs to each of the floors and wonder around (often making as much noise as possible, and often late at night when tenants are trying to sleep).  There is also a big issue with the vents in the apartments.  For some reason, odors simply waft from apartment to apartment through the vents.  Almost every night while we lived there, we were constantly being 'smoked out' of our bathroom because of cigarette and Marijuana odors.  Management responded to complaints about this by simply sending emails to all the tenants reminding them there is no smoking allowed in the building.  Management went so far as to respond to our complaint saying that at the time we sent the complaint, he was walking in the hallways and didn't smell anything.  Of course not, the issue is inside the apartment not outside in the hallways, genius.  That said, nothing changed.  Further, the building's own staff have been known to smoke in the stairwells.  During our time there, we spoke with other tenants who complained of flooding in their apartment and rodent problems.  We did not experience anything like that.  Overall, the apartment is livable, the problem is that it's just not worth that much money to live in a place where I had to constantly avoid the bathroom because of the strong stench of cigarettes and pot.  It became clear early on that management really would not do anything to address the issues.

I had lived in the Merchant Commons building for the first year they were open and there had been quite a number of problems. In short:1. I reported no heat 13 different days over the winter.2. There was a mouse problem in my apartment that took two months to fix3. The water is always dirty4. The heating/air-conditioning unit is so loud that I could barely hear while on the phone and it would wake me up at night5. The shades on the floor to ceiling windows do not block out much light and people outside can still see inside if your lights are onThe long:I give this place 2 stars instead of one simply because I did have friends in other units in the building who did not have as many problems as I had.I thought that living in one of the more expensive buildings in the area would have been a great idea but this management company just is not up to par.  I first moved in June 2013 when things were still under construction. The AC stopped working a bunch of times and every time  I reported it a maintenance guy came, looked at the system, often said it was dust clogging the unit, then cleaned it, then it worked again.  But then a few times they couldn't get it to work and one of the maintenance guys thought the thermostat was faulty. Then most of the 13 times I reported the heat not working I asked them to replace the thermostat but they never did. Some nights it was 22 degrees outside yet I had no heat and they would not supply me with space heaters. The tap water was so dirty that regardless of whether I washed the dishes through the dish washer or by hand, they still dried with a film of dirt on them. And the mice. After I reported the mouse in my apartment I asked them to move the appliances to check for holes that the mice could be entering from. Instead they put down bait inside of plastic containers that the mice never ate. I had to purchase my own bait which seemed to kill the first mouse that was leaving its poop all over my countertop.  But a week later I started seeing more droppings on my countertop.  They still did not move the appliances as I asked and put down mouse traps. After a few days I found a dead mouse in one if the traps, maintenance finally agreed to move the appliances, and they found a load of droppings under the dishwasher. The hole was plugged and finally the mouse problem was gone.
