Karen is a true God-fearing woman. She imitates Jesus not by telling people what they want to hear but what they need to hear. She has guided me through scripture and prayer. She is the ONLY therapist that has ever challenged me emotionally, spiritually, and mentally. She takes a non-biased approach and truly focuses on the goals of her clients. I like that she has given me homework so that I can draw nearer to God and focus on my personal growth throughout the week. If you want a therapist worth every dollar spent, I HIGHLY recommend Karen as a Christian therapist.

I debated even leaving a review, but a few people have encouraged me to share my experience so others can at least be warned. My husband and I went to Karen for preventative marriage counseling and hoped to get better at conflict resolution. We are firm believers in the benefits of counseling. We went to Karen once together and then the following week individually. To keep this short I will just share some of my red flags: 1. I have an autoimmune disease, Celiac Disease, and Karen firmly stated that she believes autoimmune diseases are self inflicted because it is just emotional trauma you need to heal from. Obviously going against all science. 2. When my husband stated his parents were divorced her IMMEDIATE follow up question was "who cheated?" I find that absolutely unprofessional to plant this idea that someone cheated; causing more harm than good. And in this case from everything we know, no one cheated, they unfortunately grew apart. 3. During our first session in the process of talking about ourselves she started crying. I kid you not. She claimed that she feels emotions and that someone in the room needed to cry. My husband and I were very confused because we were not even talking about anything emotional or needed to cry. 4. My husband and I were hoping to spread the sessions out instead of coming weekly and spending $180 each week. When I asked her if I could schedule two weeks out, she responded with, there's momentum in counseling and that she also forgets things and its best to come weekly. I found it extremely unprofessional to state that she forgets things easily, and because of that we should be coming weekly. 5. Overall, it was a bad experience. I also talked to another friend that has actually gone to her as well, and unfortunately didn't have a positive experience. I just hope this is helpful for anyone seeking out a professional counselor.

Business Response on Google Aug 1st, 2022
First of all, I am truly sorry you did not have a positive experience. I am also grateful to google and your review for giving us a chance to resolve it if you are hoping for that as well. I seek to be the best counselor and Christian I can be so why not consider this an opportunity?I want to address your main points, and if there is something we can do to make it right please call me personally I would be happy to talk to you.1. Autoimmune disease first. Here is a link to a study where over 15,000 patients who suffered childhood traumas were surveyed, and the connection between early childhood trauma and their conditions is astounding as 67% had one or more and they only tested for 24 of the conditions, and currently over 100 I believe exist). This meant they were 60% more likely to have one of the 24 autoimmune diseases than a person who reported no major childhood traumas. I will let you decide for yourself if this approach has some merit. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3318917/ Please check out the study.2. Me crying in session does happen at times and is common with good counselors. My empathy is on the high side of the scale for sure but that is why I am a counselor (because I naturally care about people), and many clients claimed this really helped them feel what they are holding back. (Basically, a chain reaction concept, where my cry sets off their cry, then everyone feels better). It does make sense if you think about it because often the face we put on to the counselor is our everything is the fine face, (even though we have sought help because it is not) and our true feelings going on inside certainly don't match. While it may not be a gift in everyone's opinion, it is a gift I believe is for my profession and one that I cherish.3. Lastly on the matter of timing. It is true spreading counseling sessions out does truly tax all party's memories, especially the counselor who sees multiple clients a day at times even with good notes. In addition, it does truly tend to slow progress in my experience, and we see much better results when minimizing time frames between sessions for everyone's sake, though we try to be understanding of budgets. So much so that we even advise clients to wait a week or two for the first session if they need to save up so we can put them closer together.Again if your hope in leaving the review is a resolution please reach out to me. Otherwise, a good opportunity to address some topics that could use more open discussion. Especially the autoimmune one.
