image We had a significant bathroom remodeling job done about 6 years ago by Battles & Battles (B&B) - we were initially happy with the results until this year when the grout on a shower shelf started falling out. We asked B&B to come and take care of this small repair -- which they would not do and instead referred us to some other company who they said could help us -- at own expense of course. Very disappointing.

image We contacted this company to give us an estimate to replace our porcelain tile kitchen floor that is less than 5 years old. It was originally installed by another Knoxville title company (that was subcontracted by our new home builder). We were having cracking through our grout across our entire kitchen floor. The original tile company that did the installation came out one time and replaced the grout only for it to crack again three months later. We called Battles and Battles hoping they would be able to tell us why are floor was cracking, and then write up a contract so we could hire them to repair or replace our floor properly.
They did come out as scheduled for the initial consultation and a flooring inspector to determine to that our kitchen floor was sloping due to settling of the house. We were told how the floor would need to be repaired with self leveling cement in order to prevent any more cracking. We were to receive a proposal from this company by the end of that week and never did. We contacted this company several times asking where our proposal was at. After two weeks we got an email stating what they would do for us with a price tag of almost $3,000. But it was not written on a business contract with the breakdown of materials cost, labor cost, and demolition cost, but just a paragraph summarizing what they would do for the amount they were charging. We called them back and asked them to please send us a more detailed contract. Also, at that time, my husband had mentioned that he could do the demolition work on the floor if it would save us some money. We had also decided not to replace our kitchen floor entirely but just replace the area where they were needing to repair it with leveling cement where the slope was. With these two things taken into consideration you would have thought when we received our contract that the price would have decreased from our original contract. It didn't. Again after multiple phone calls to this company, and excuse after excuse given to us why they didn't have our contract ready, we finally received the contract today, but it did not reflect any discount for my husband doing the demolition, nor did it reflect a breakdown of pricing for materials, labor, etc. The cherry on top was that the price had actually went up almost $400 from the original quote we were given in the first email when they had planned on replacing our entire kitchen floor. None of this makes sense to my husband or me. We should not have to contact a company for two and a half weeks to try to just get a proposal for work that needs done. This company should be transparent as to what they're charging their customers on their proposals. There should be pricing listed for the materials, the cost of the labor, any extra charges such as disposing of materials, etc. It even has gotten to the point where my husband asked this company if they didn't want to do the job and if that was the reason why they were dragging their feet on giving us a proposal, being transparent in their pricing, and quoting such a high price. We had received two other estimates from to other companies that were a quarter of what this company wanted to charge us.
We certainly will not be using this company to replace our kitchen floor but anyone that does business with this company "beware!". It seems that if the job is something that they don't want to do they just ignore you and hope you go away. It also seems that they mark their pricing up and hide their increased pricing through various things such as material cost and disposal fees because they do not disclose these prices on their contracts, so you are left to guess how much you're being charged for all of the materials, demo, and labor. I will never contact this company again and would discourage anyone from using them.
