This is a terribly mismanaged facility. Although some of the caregivers are hardworking, dedicated and loving individuals, they are over worked and underpaid and the facility is almost always understaffed. There is a big turnover of staff and inexperienced individuals are hired on a regular basis. One of the new hires didn't even know how to assist my mother to the rest room and had to call for help. Regular staff is often scheduled 12 hour shifts or even longer to cover for "no shows". I have witnessed a lead caregiver verbally abuse residents (and a visitor) on several occasions. And she has even been abusive to my own mother. I've witnessed the "withholding of drink at meals" from one of the residents because the staff didn't like the possibility of her making a mess with it.. A couple of the residents have even been able to wander off the property, only to be found along Crawford street and one was found walking down FM 131. The one on Crawford St had fallen into the gutter, luckily she wasn't seriously injured. One of the leading causes of death here are results from falls (usually overnight) that the elderly individual just can’t seem to recover from. My mother was allowed to fall several times and the last fall resulted in a fractured hip and gash in her head. She was placed on Hospice while in the hospital and Unfortunately died because the trauma of such an event set her back so far she could not recover. They have alarmed beds and chairs but caregivers can’t seem to respond to the alarms fast enough because they are understaffed, off in another area of the home or sleeping on the sofa as I have witnessed more than once. In addition to the $4400+ it cost to have my mother here we hired full time sitters to be with my mom during her awake hours when we couldn’t be there, to insure she was taken care of. I would recommend exploring every possibility before placing your loved one in ANY facility, but especially this one. There are wonderful private individuals you can hire so they can stay in their own home if you can do some online searching. The advertisement for this facility is false. They have no transportation to and from Dr appointments or activities. There is no "individualized/personal care" except for an additional fee, and there are only a couple of caregivers that I would have trusted with my mother for personal care. There are no organized group activities. The facility basically provides 2 1/2 meals a day that are terrible because there is no cook. The owner fired the cook and Meal responsibility has been delegated to caregivers who have no cooking ability. The food is terrible store bought frozen foods and canned soups (3-4 kinds over and over) along with other highly processed foods. The portions are extremely small to stretch out their supply. Dinner is a tiny cup of soup and half of a sandwich with maybe a jello for desert. The housekeeping is questionable. Never once in 3 years did they clean my mothers room (we did it ourselves) and we did her laundry and linens. Even though advertised, there is not a telephone in the room and staff does not appreciate a resident using the facility phone. They do have a big screen tv which my family donated and their library consists of maybe 10 books. The owner, Betty Stoker, is arrogant and rude not only to her staff but most people she comes in contact with. I would not recommend this facility to anyone. For any further information feel free to contact me. My next review will be to the Grayson County HHS and licensing office.
