image BEWARE...be clear on what you are getting into when you sign the financial contract. It is portrayed that getting insurance exception and applied to deductible is all but certain, but in reality there is really no guarantee. If you have to transfer to the hospital for any reason to give birth (in my wife's case it was as simple as she was going to go past 42 weeks) you could get stuck with the birth center bill (our whole deductible amount) AND the hospital bills (so having to meet the whole deductible and then pay the leftovers). Since none of the amount we paid to the birth center could actually go towards our in network deductible we basically paid double. As new parents the idea of going over our due date was something we were ignorant about but the possibility of going over 42 weeks was definitely downplayed by them. Read the contract through thoroughly to understand what you are signing up for, understand all of the risks of pregnancy/percentages that could require you to transfer to hospital, and just know that if there is any chance at all that you might have to transfer to hospital you could get stuck paying two bills. Everyone was polite and nice, but I wish the process and financials had been a little more transparent.

image Prospective mothers beware: CC birthing centers business plan and contract sets them up with ZERO financial incentive for them to NOT transfer you to hospital care. Their contract states that no refunds are issued after 36 weeks of pregnancy. In my case, CC birth center recommended a transfer to hospital care (a.k.a. refused to assist with an out of hospital delivery). In doing so they ignored the doctors assessment that I WAS suitable for out of hospital birth. Ultimately you may be left with paying CC birth center thousands of dollars plus the hospital bill with seemingly nothing to show for it except an abundance of worry that something is wrong with your baby. Sadly, we are now aware of multiple first-hand accounts and many second hand accounts of the same thing happening to other couples. Am I saying CC birthing center is a scam? No, but I would be lying if I said it hadnt crossed my mind. If you are interested in the context of my statements continue reading below.
My personal desires and expectation was for the midwife to guide and assist throughout the pregnancy and delivery of my first child. I expected the midwifes knowledge and experience to keep me confident and calm because frankly, I didnt know what to expect. As my baby came to term an otherwise wonderful pregnancy became exceedingly stressful when the routine fetal heart rate indicated there may be some concerns about babys health. Off we went for some ultrasound testing/monitoringNo issues found. 2 weeks later at the next checkup, babys heart rate alarmed the midwife again. This time the midwife sent us to the OB ward at the hospital for evaluation and continuous heart rate monitoring per the on-call physicians recommendation. After an hour of monitoring, a few questions from the doctor, and a $2,000+ bill (not covered by the birthing center), the doctor concluded that the babys heart rate was in the lower range of what is considered normal but with no other abnormalities from the baby or the mother that there was no cause for concern and that there was no reason we couldnt proceed with an out-of-hospital delivery. In fact, it was said that all things pointed toward a strong heart. Fast forward 4 more weeks2 days before my due date, babys heart rate is behaving exactly the same way it was at the doctors office. My husband and I are called back to the midwifes office at the end of the day so she can tell us that she isnt comfortable delivering our baby and that she was recommending a transfer to the care of a physician for the delivery. I repeat, 2 days before my due date and nothing had changed from when the doctor gave us the all clear. My husband and I put our heads together and salvaged what was left of our birth plan and five days later I delivered a healthy baby without CC Birth Centers help.
Oh, and babys low heart rate? My husband and I evaluated my supplementation and discontinued a vitamin/herbal supplement that promotes oxygen absorption that I had been taking throughout the pregnancy. It stood to reason in our minds that well oxygenated blood would enable babys heart to beat at a slower rate. I delivered our baby 3 days after discontinuing this supplement and throughout the 14 hour labor our babys heart rate was solid and steady at 125 bpm (within normal range). We had told the midwife about the supplement and even directly queried if that might be the explanation for what we were seeing. Instead of sitting down with us and helping us get to the bottom of what was going on we were handed 6 weeks of worry that something may be seriously wrong with our baby and then shown the door.
I do believe the staff at CC birthing center is genuinely concerned about the health of a mother and baby. It was obvious to my husband and I that they operate out of an overabundance of caution. So much so that I would call it fear. If that is what you are looking for in a midwife, this is probably the place for you, otherwise I would highly recommend finding another midwife.

image Beth Overton started out as my midwife and ended up as my dear friend. I needed an alternative to my quick-to-cut-obstetrician and the day I met with Beth I knew I had my answer. Not only was she an experienced midwife, saavy about preventing and treating the usual prenatal problems, but she had such a cheerful warmth about her that I found I looked forward to each visit instead of dreading them like I had my doctor's visits. She was very knowledgeable on nutrition and always took time to share amazing insights on the process of pregnancy with me. I was my healthiest under her care and I suspect that's why my sister and SIL also became her highly satisfied clients. I think Beth is a remarkable woman and a wonderful role model. I highly admire her as a person and feel honored to know her.
