As I neared my 65th birthday I looked forward to a once in a lifetime deer hunt with my adult daughter and son in Wyoming. After three hours of a Wyoming ground-blizzard, snow drifts that nearly swallowed our vehicles and a nearly impassable mountain valley snow drift with the wind blowing a gale as only a Wyoming high mountain gale can blow we unpacked, settled in, built the wall tents fire up and proceeded to prepare for the opening mornings hunt, hoping and praying the tent would hold up under the extreme conditions.
As we trekked up the mountain the next morning from camp with our head lamps barely able to light our way because of the blowing snow, I struggled in the knee-deep snow while trying to adapt to the 8,000 foot elevation having come from my home elevation of 180 feet. Crossing only one elk track fresh in the snow and seeing no deer tracks, while my son and daughter hunted the surrounding knobs and coulees we ended the morning hunt and headed back to camp, which turned into quite an exercise in survival for me. As I sunk into my chair back in our tent, exhausted, I shared my concerns for our safety with my son and daughter. Under these conditions this was not going to be the fun week I had envisioned. What were our options?
My daughter said, let me go make a phone call. Within two hours we packed up, left camp to return later in the week and our family hunting trip was salvaged by the good-graces of Antelope Creek Outfitters, LLC. The very next morning, due to the experience and local knowledge of Antelope Creek Outfitters, my son harvested his first mule deer buck. The result being another hunter-for-life family member. The following morning my daughter was able to fill her cow elk tag under the tutelage of Antelope Creek Outfitters. My afternoon opportunity for a very nice six-point white tail buck was derailed by an equipment malfunction after Antelope Creek personnel put me in perfect position to fill my tag. All-in-all it was a stellar turn around to our once in a life time hunt in just 24 hours entirely due to the expertise and professionalism of Antelope Creek Outfitters, LLC.
Fortunately, I was able to redeem myself later in the week when an Antelope Creek guide accompanied us into our high elevation camp to bring it out. After a couple of stops to scope and look into canyons and coulees my guide spotted a buck laying in the bottom of a draw not 200 yards from the rim of the canyon. She planned our stalk, put me in position and I made a difficult downhill neck shot without the buck knowing we were anywhere around. My Wyoming tag was filled completing our families three-for-three trip.
Thanks to Antelope Creek Outfitters, LLC , my daughter and son we had exceeded our once in a lifetime hunt expectations on this family Wyoming deer hunt. Thank you, McKay, Adam and Ms. Cindy for an awesome 65th birthday.
