Roots continues to help save my life. I wish I could put words to the deep appreciation I have for both roots counseling services and housing, but only those who have been through it can understand what it's like to be broken, back in the grips of my disease. I came into roots baffled and broken after a horrendous return to using, looking for a second chance, new setting, new friends, new approach, and a stricter more peer accountability based recovery. I got what I was seeking and then some. Roots counseling provided me with a stable re-entry into the real world after a 28 day inpatient stay, slowly tapering down to lower levels of care as deemed fit by my one on one counselor and other clinicians. Throughout my "re-integration" into everyday "normal" young adult life (work, socializing, time with family, exercise, fun etc.) I was provided many process groups and house circles to discuss current life events and struggles and receive feedback from staff and my peers. They even continue to offer outpatient care after a resident graduates their roots housing stay, which in my mind is critical to long term recovery. The staff are very personable, yet are direct when warranted and hold me to high standards. Roots housing added a plethora of fellowship, fun, conversation, friends, and accountability to my life when I needed these things the most. I will say, roots housing is not for the faint of heart. They will not tolerate continuous refusal to work on oneself and his/her shortcomings, a necessary part of recovery and in keeping a safe environment for all peers in a sober living setting. I will forever hold the experience, atmosphere, fellowship, and care roots provided for me close to my heart.
