The B and B was fine, but we were left with a bad impression of the WestPort because a "special diet” charge that appeared on our bill without warning. I indicated that I didn’t eat cheese when asked about breakfast options. The host made an egg dish with cheese for my husband and scrambled eggs for me. All very delicious. When I checked out, I was presented with an extra “special diet” charge. But there was no notice beforehand, no conversation about adding a charge to my bill, for my breakfast. It's true that the WestPort’s confirmation info includes the line, “Special diet may incur a $15. a day charge per person.” However, there’s no explanation of what is considered to be a “special diet,” nor did the host say anything about an extra charge before breakfast was served. A general statement with no explanation just isn’t enough.  How was I to know that saying I couldn’t eat cheese was considered a special diet warranting a charge?  Is a "regular" diet one that includes cheese?  The host didn't communicate anything about what was "special" and what wasn't.  I probably wouldn’t have mentioned my aversion to cheese if I had known I was going to be charged extra. It’s not so much the amount of the charge or the charge itself. It’s that the charge was sprung on me with no notice or warning, at the last minute. To include that charge without previous notice before presenting the bill is bad business practice and shows a lack of communication with customers.
