Up here temporarily and wanted to get some runs in. Had a great time running rim to rim and adventuring around the trails.

Conservation efforts did well in preserving Cowiche Canyon and Uplands as a natural area. Wilderness is therapeutic for all people, especially for those who need a break from the constant barrage of information that accompanies urban life. Yakima and vicinity keeps pushing west and it would only have been a matter of time for this area to be "developed". (This area reminds me of the Saltese Uplands near Liberty Lake and Badger Mountain Preserve by Richland.) I feel that this Trailhead best serves as entry into the preserve for the most comprehensive experience. On top, many trails loop around giving wide open views across the steppe. Down in the canyon, a vigorous Cowiche Creek flows through geologic wonder that exposes three distinct lava layers. Columnar basalt contrasts with the pillowy andesite rock. The variety of trails work for quick walks to refresh or long treks for hikers. I did a 9 mile figure eight loop which took in both sides of the canyon. Mountain bikers also find rewarding routes here.

Cowiche Canyon is one of Yakima's true gems. Close to town yet when you are there it's peaceful and beautiful, especially now in the spring with so many wildflowers in bloom. There are so many varios trails in the uplands part of the canyon you can take that even when it's really busy there, it doesn't seem like it. Great place for mountain biking, hiking and photography. I like the lowlands for going on a walk. It's flat and the cowiche creek runs through the canyon so it green and lush, (for Eastern, WA), and often opportunities to see wildlife. Also some really cool rock formations, including a beautiful wall of columnar basalt, often covered in many color of lichen. There is even a trail that that takes you up the other side of the canyon, through a vineyard and ending at Wilridge Winery. Great place that is kid and dog friendly!

super quick to get to this trailhead. the dogs love it and the views of mt adams and mt rainier are always welcome. the trails are usually pretty quiet with lots of visibility if youre trying to keep to yourself. there are maps located throughout the trail system make it hard to get lost, and the occasional mountain biker adds to the excitement of it all. one of the best spots to take in the sunset.
