We stayed in the stand-alone cottage and it was so much more spacious than I expected. The old historic floors were gorgeous. A nice touch was the bubbler of water in our kitchen so we could have cold, fresh water available. The bed was very comfortable - really soft sheets - and I loved opening up the back door to let the cool breeze in since there was also a screen door. The host was waiting for us at check-in, very friendly and welcoming, and no extra hassle or paperwork, just showed us to our room and asked if we needed any recommendations. He made breakfast the next morning, both a quiche AND french toast and extras. This location was excellent for us not having to drive too far after "enjoying" Middleburg all day. Would definitely stay again.

Some friends and I booked a lovely sounding getaway for a girls weekend, with cooking demonstrations and social gatherings. We were really excited! The photos online looked lovely and the place had 5 stars on Google reviews. We arrived. We saw no stars. The location was nice even though we werent certain it was actually Middleburg because it was basically Aldie. But we were willing to overlook the location discrepancy. We walked into the main house and found a man sitting at a desk. We asked if this was where we checked in and he told us it was but seemed put off by us interacting with him. Like we were interrupting what he was doing. It was awkward. He told us we could walk upstairs and check out our rooms so we walked through the sitting area, which looked dusty, up the stairs and found our rooms. We were expecting antiques and an old house. That was not the issue. Its an old BnB and could be adorable. Instead what we found was filth. It was dirty. The pillow cases and sheets had stains on them. The windows and curtains were littered with bugs, both dead and alive, mostly beetles and stinkbugs. The corners of the rooms were also littered with insects. We checked out the bathroom, which was in the hallway and we would share. Again, not the biggest deal. What was a big deal was the pink mold on the shower curtain and general uncleanliness of the bathroom. We went downstairs and the kitchen looked mostly fine except for the open garbage can. All of our issues could have been solved with a decent cleaning. Please hire a professional cleaning service. We left, went across the road to the winery to figure out what to do. We all decided we wouldnt feel comfortable sleeping in those conditions. We also decided we wouldnt feel comfortable talking to the front desk guy because he was so standoffish. Then we read some bad reviews and were convinced it would be an unpleasant experience if we confronted management. So we cut our losses and left. Luckily we were able to get the cost of the rooms refunded after explaining why we left over email. It was a shame to miss the cooking demos but we just could not feel comfortable being in a place that wasnt clean. Rooms: Rooms would be fine if they were clean. Nearby activities: Tons to do in the area! Lots of wineries, one right across the street. Its an amazing location! Walkability: Its on a busy road, so not really walkable to anything.

We loved our stay at the Briar Patch and are strongly considering another one this fall. We stayed in the Cottage, and it was a perfect wine weekend getaway. The heat worked strongly in December, the kitchen was large and well equipped, and the bathtub was wonderful. It was a cozy but spacious place to curl up in the evenings with a bottle or two of wine after spending the day out and about. There are at least 3 wineries within a 5 minute drive and more than I could count within a 20 minute radius. We were personally able to walk to both 50 West and Chrysallis from Briar Patch, but that may not be for everyone. Middleburg is a short drive down the road. I only corresponded with the owners over phone and email, since Dan was recovering from surgery, but they were pleasant and helpful in those exchanges. Dan's brother stayed at the property to take care of us during our visit, and he could not have been nicer. We were very happy with the breakfasts he prepared during our stay.

Great concept, poor execution. Did the cooking class which was great but isn't offered regularly. Older couple running and maintaining the place are super nice and helpful but can't keep up with what it takes to run a place that size. We stayed in the "Cottage", nice from a privacy standpoint, very dirty inside. Mouse poop and dead insects everywhere. Bed was very clean though and nice bedding. Not much in the kitchen, old appliances, not much charm to the cottage. Mostly things are just very run down here and need some tlc. In all fairness we were not there during wedding season which is when they are busy and probably have more help. Awesome location, 5 mins to a ton of wineries, 10 mins to middleburg, which is a great spot to shop or grab a bite to eat.
