This is THE place to find unique and high end fabrics. They have tons of supplies you would not find at places like Jo Ann's or Michaels. They also have this fantastic $2.97 a yard clearance table that is my absolute happy place. You never know what you will find. Zipper in every color, lots of luxurious trim, endless buttons, and more! That being said, fabric itself is something you don't jump into looking to save a few bucks, if you want quality then you have to spend the money to get it. If you want high end designer fabrics, velvets, and such, this is a fantastic place to go to make top quality items. They also have top brand bernina sewing machines that you can't usually find in a store. For customer service, I see the other reviews and I think they are absolutely ridiculous. This is not a place you go to be hand led around because you don't know what kind of fabric your pattern takes. This is more of a place for professionals and people with experience. If you want to reach that level then I have heard nothing but good things about their classes. If you need to find something specific, you can go ask one of the people working there, then they leave you to your own devices (which I absolutely LOVE and adore). Don't waste their time grabbing a pattern when you have never opened one in your life. That being said, they have always been happy to answer my questions and I have never felt I was being hurried along. Don't ask open ended questions, know what you want and cut it down to specifics, anything further go take a class. The manager Yaron is a great man and very helpful. I can't say enough good things about him. Very professional, considerate, and helpful.

I felt like the selection was a bit dated, but they do have a lot of stuff. Perhaps with more time and diligence you can find what you need.

The customer service thing has never bothered me at G Street - probably because fabric shopping is a serious business and I want to be left to my own devices as I wander around. Not every fabric store is for everyone. Once upon a time I was at Jo-Ann's and listened to a customer ream a sales associate out for the lack of selection in the button department. Well, G Street is where you go when you want buttons for days. Jo-Ann's is where you go if you need something quick and dirty to replace a button on your shirt. So G Street isn't the place you go if you are looking to be shepherded through the aisles by a sympathetic sewist. It just isn't. And no, they don't have absolutely everything that there is to be had in world of fabric. But if you want to make your own wedding dress, they have what you need. If you want high-end coatings to make your own cashmere coat, they have that too. That kind of thing costs what it costs. You're paying for the fact that you can wake up on a Saturday, decide that you're going to make a ballgown, and find everything and exactly what you're looking for: boning, silk pins, quality lining, beaded silk, lace, trimming, bra pads so you don't nip out... all of it is there. And on the opposite end of the price scale, G Street has a treasure trove of fabric remnants for anyone who knows what they're touching. Every week, there is a delivery of fabric from New York. Four yards of knit used by DKNY for $2.97 a yard. Theory's cotton. Wool/poly blends. Soft tulle. Miles and miles of knit. Silk remnants for $7.97 a yard. Organza, novelty, whatever. Of course, you never know what you're going to find on these tables. Sometimes it is nothing. Other times, you walk out with 20 yards of stuff that you didn't know you needed: fabric that makes for a decent beta version of a dress - if it fails, it was $9 and an improved pattern. If it works, well, who can complain about that? Not so long ago, I made a ballgown out of fabric I found on the $2.97 table. Do *that* at Jo-Ann's. Or even the mecca of fabric stores: Mood. Touchy-feeley, G Street is not. Personally, I don't mind. I'm in my own little world when I'm fabric shopping and I object to being interrupted. However, if you need it now, and you need selection, and you are reasonably self-sufficient in a fabric store... G Street is the place.
