My wife and I hired A & W Contracting, owned by Mike Pope, at the recommendation of our tile installer. He came to our home to meet us and we informed him of what we wanted done. We hired him shortly before Thanksgiving and paid him half of his bid up front for materials and to start the job.
I asked him to hold off on depositing the check I gave him on Thursday and asked him to not deposit the check until that Monday, because I to transfer funds to cover the payment. He stated that he would, but he deposited the check that Friday and caused a large overdraft to the account.
When he started the job things were going fairly well. After a couple of weeks we started to notice that he was cutting corners a bit. He would say that he could finish or start working on things, i.e...The kitchen cabinets, without having the handles. All he needed was the size and spacing for them.
He also stated that he could save us money by using the original cabinet hinges. He said he would us a certain paint that would not chip, peel or discolor. The hinges started peeling and chipping only a few days after he painted them.
While they were painting the cabinets with an oil-based paint they got it all on our off white colored walls. He used white paint to cover the spots they made with no regard to matching the wall color.
He asked for a second payment on December 14th, even though he hadn't completed half the job. We agreed to it because he would be back on Monday and work all day. He the cashed the check that same afternoon at my bank. He showed up on that Monday, December 17th, he didn't work the entire day. After 12/17 he never showed up again. He asked for a payment and had no intention of coming back to complete the job.
Mike Pope did substandard work at my home. He replaced the baseboards and installed them the wrong way. He did nothing to make sure that they were level and didn't even bother to patch the holes drilled out because of a flood we had in March.
He kept all of the materials purchased to complete the job he was hired to do and then charged us $250 more for painting a cabinet that was about 12 inches tall by 24 inches wide and 18 inches deep and a cabinet door that he supposedly had custom made.
I would never recommend Mike Pope and his company A & W Contracting to anyone who needed cabinet work done. He is a dishonest person with no idea on how to do what he says he will do.
