Abhorrent behavior on behalf of the management here. My 16yo son is working on getting his first job through Goodwill. He was referred here for his drug screening. I had him leave school early and I took him to this location. He had his referral form and his ID amd I told him to go check in while I waited in the parking lot and to let me know if he had any issues or needed me to stay. He texted me a few minutes later saying he was checked in and filling out his paperwork, so I left as I have to work. This was at 3:20. At 4:23 the receptionist calls and says a parent must be present for the appointment. I explained that he was there for drug screening for a job and that no one had an issue when he walked in the door. He told me that I could give them a letter stating that I authorize them to see my son without a parent present. I asked if an email would suffice and he said yes, but when I asked for the email address he put the phone down. A few moments later a woman picks up the phone and is again telling me that they will not see minors withouta parent present. I tell her that the last person I spoke with said I could email them authorization and I ask her if that is still the case. She says it is, though she seems a bit reluctant, and I ask for the email address. As I am writing down the email address she says, "But is he even capable of using the restroom on his own? Because we can't help him with that, and with his autism...". Now, I will admit, my behavior from this point forward was not pretty, but it was not undeserved either. I cut her off immediately. My son does not have autism. This is a medical professional. She knows she should not be assuming a diagnosis based off of a brief conversation with a person that she just met. She certainly should not be assuming that the young man standing in her waiting room with a referral for a drug screening for a job and paperworkthat he completed himself for the appointment is incapable of using the restroom on his own. That is incredibly insulting, and while my son does not have autism, she seems to be under the impressionthat people that do have autism have difficulty using therestroom and as far as I know, that is not a commonsymptom. Either that or she was concerned abouthisability to use therestroom based on what? Hisappearance? That is concerning coming out of the mouth of not only a medical professional, but when I asked to speak with a manager she told me she is the manager of this practice. As a mother of a child with a disability I have been to far more doctors appointments and dealt with a lot more medical professionals than most and I have never been confronted by this level of ignorance coming from a medical professional in my life. My son has reached a point where he is able to get a job, he's able to work and gain some independence. This appointment today would have been his first doctors appointment he attended on his own, and it was a complete disaster. Instead of feeling accomplished and independent andproud of hisprogress, as he should be, he was insulted and judged. This woman should be absolutely ashamed of herself and she should find herself a new career because she clearly doesn't have the compassion required to work in the medical field. This ableist mindset doesn't belong in a medical practice. Goodwill has been alerted to this incident, and I certainly hope they take action and sever their ties with this establishment.
