Inside Long John Silvers Seafood, theres a seafood counter with a stone-plastered floor, hardwood trim and polished brass railings. Seats line three tiers of white porcelain tiles in the ceiling, while past the seating area is a long dining room with green and silver walls. Theres a counter behind glass, next to which a man in a wetsuit operates a poached salmon from a menu reminiscent of upscale menus at Manhattans famous sushi restaurants. One of the best seafood combinations Ive ever tasted, its just as appealing to me as it is to other people.
Seafood is important to , the American people. Thats obvious by the number of markets with their names intertwined. Heres one of the many such shops: Long John Silvers Seafood Market and Restaurant, which has numerous locations throughout the nation. When I take a trip back home, I always eat at Long John Silvers, both because its local and because seafood here, especially the east side, is exceptional. To give you an idea, that day Im in the market, I sit down with Marcie Koch, owner of Cooks of the Sea, and pick out the fish she thinks would taste good together. For $49, we get just about everything she recommends to make an excellent seafood stew.
It takes almost half an hour to pack the food to bring home, and the market has dozens of cases of seafood in which to put the frozen goods. They store most of the seafood in a cool room set up like a freight container. Its a comfortable, busy place with lots of people bustling about in the mornings. And, I find, lots of fish to choose from.
If you get your seafood at Long John Silvers Seafood Market and Restaurant, it comes with a smile.
Cooks of the Sea
A former steward from Long Island Sea Farms meets me for lunch at the seafood markets restaurant, Cooks of the Sea. John Cook is seated and the food was just amazing.
