Darla, every new patient is charged a fee for an examination and treatment plan prior to any treatment being rendered. No treatment is usually provided at that appointment unless it is an emergency, as we never know what treatement is necessary in advance of the first appointment or the time it will take. A claim is sent to your insurance for the appointment and the insurance reimbursement will be sent to you. It may take a few weeks for the insurance check to be sent to you. Since our office is out-of-network with your insurance, this is how it is handled for the first visit. You were given an estimated fee for what the insurance will not cover to treat the tooth that needs a filling. Dental insurance is not like medical insurance - it is very different and does not pay nearly as well. Dental insurance only pays small percentages of SOME treatment up to a maximum amount set by the insurance. As a result, the patient is given an estimated amount due to cover a portion of the fee at the time the service is rendered. Nobody is ripping you off. You just do not understand your dental insurance. We guarantee you that you have and will only be charged for actual services, that you will be informed of the fee in advance, and we will not keep any inadvertent overpayment. We have no control over what the insurance covers and what percentage that is payed for services that are covered.
