image My brother went to a computer science competition organized by this school. On the day of the competition, they separated him from his teacher and sent him and his team to the gym. After waiting there for 20 minutes, him and his team decided to look for someone because nothing was happening. They finally found the right place and they disqualified them for being late. They also randomly grabbed his teacher to grade the exams, which is odd, as if they didn't have someone in charge of that. My brother has participated in previous competitions organized by this place and by what he tells me they are terribly organized and lack proper communication skills. It is quite a shame since these are national competitions, I was expecting more professionalism from your part. My brother will continue participating because he wants to challenge himself and become better but this negative experience was a waste of time and it impacted him negatively.

image State wrestling tournament in Houston on Feb 17 '23 was severely oversold, and organizers had police kicking out all the paid ticket holders that were accidentally in the unsigned teams seating.
Cop was polite and apologetic while kicking us all out, at least. I paid for 3 two-day wristbands and did not get the opportunity to watch the match we came to see.
UIL should not sell tickets for the entire seating capacity of the venue if they are designating 1/3rd of the seating for teams only. What a miserable experience. So many angry parents.
Other than UIL overselling the venue and police kicking so many people out, the venue (Berry Center) was nice and the athletics seemed very organized. Spectator experience was poor though.

image Went to high school district basketball game and tried to support the kids and they actually cleared out the gym and tried to charge for second game. I was never made aware of this process. This is high school sports not American Greed. 32 dollars for me and my wife plus concessions. If I want to support local high school sports it should not cost so much! I can go to a professional baseball game for $10, thats ridiculous!

image UIL athletics is unable to explain the policies they enforce and not motivated enough to find the answers.I have reached to the UIL athletics department staff on numerous occasions with the question of "Why does the UIL prohibit 6th graders from participating in middle school sports with 7th and 8th graders?".  My scenario involves trying to understand why my 6th grade daughter isn't able to participate with 7th and 8th graders if her skill level justifies it.  Kids play up all the time in sporting events as well as academics.  There's nothing special about the circumstances - she walks the halls and rides the bus with these same 7th and 8th graders every day during school.  She's not homeschooled or attending another middle school down the road.  Why isn't she allowed to tryout as a 6th grader and then go on to play with 7th and 8th graders if her skill level demonstrates she (or any 6th grader) can compete at a higher level? My question simply is "Why does this policy exist?".  There may be a very good reason that it exists and I invite someone to please enlighten me.  Thus far all I have received after multiple emails is a lazy response from a Brian Polk where he just regurgitated the policy back to me with no explanation on why it exist.  I read the handbook and saw the policy but would like to know why the policy was put in place to begin with and not the policy itself.  My second interaction was when I was able to speak with someone via the phone.  I spoke with a very agitated and combative Mr. Mark Cousins who let me know multiple times that he has 26 years of employment at UIL and doesn't know why the policy exists.  According to him some board members "probably" enacted the policy some 40 or 50 years ago and its always been that way.  He had a lot of words to share but was unable to provide any answers after talking straight for about 5 minutes.  Instead of taking some initiative and saying "I'm not sure why it exists but I'll ask some of my colleagues that I've gotten to know over my 25 years of employment hear and find out for you.  After all, its probably a question I should be able to answer seeing as how I've worked here for 26 years."  His was an answer I would expect from a teen who has only worked at UIL for 25 days.  On a second call his advice to me was to have the policy changed by submitting a request to the UIL powers that be. (He still didn't know the answer to my original questions from a week earlier.)  So I thought to myself, I'm supposed to submit a change request to have a policy changed that I don't even know why that policy exist in the first place??  Seems like a Ready!, Fire!, Aim! type of logic - sad really.    Maybe a study was done and it was found that 97% of 6th graders end up with broken clavicles when playing sports with 7th and 8th graders.  Then I wouldn't want that policy changed, it sounds like a good policy.  Its still too early to tell if its laziness or incompetence or a combination that's making this question so difficult to answer.  I looked on line, couldn't find an explanation of why it exists, I questioned a middle school basketball coach who wasn't aware of why the policy existed.  I've done a bit of research on my own outside of the UIL channels to try and find an answer, but with no success.  You would think that in an age where childhood obesity is skyrocketing UIL would want to get kids into as many sports as possible as early as possible.  If someone at UIL could provide an answer as to why this policy exist I'll be more than happy to bump this rating up and completely rewrite this review.  I'll give it at least of 4 if Mr. Cousins or Mr. Polk reply with the answer and maybe even a 5 depending on the quality and thoroughness of the answer.  Thank you to all the employees at UIL who actually make a contribution.Regards,//Eli
