My wife and I graduated from HSU in the early 1990s, and we are eternally grateful for the many professors and staff there who provided us with a quality education focused around loving God and community with our hearts and minds. My hope is that critical thinking and enlightenment education continues to be a priority at HSU, and that faculty are able to inoculate students against the viruses of Christian Nationalism and the idolatrous worship of ungodly political leaders that are wreaking havoc within SBC/Evangelical Christianity (and waging war on our Democracy). Alas, I am not too optimistic that Christian intellectual and pastoral leaders at HSU or elsewhere who stand against this fetid rot in evangelicalism will be able to save the evangelical ship from sinking. It may be too late for that as evangelicals are burning their own boats. How does one handle mutiny of the ignorant? Perhaps HSU's faculty can find a role in building something new out of the ashes. My prayer is that in so doing HSU can become a lighthouse of hope that helps us Christ-followers navigate difficult shores and bring the living water of enlightenment and salvation to others.

I don't know how things are there now, but it was a very good Baptist college when I went there during my Freshman year many years ago. The teachers I had knew their stuff really well. I stayed at the Anderson Hall dormitory and shared a room with my roommate David who was from Humble, Texas. David and I loved to play pranks on each other, and he was pretty fond of slamming the door shut whenever he'd step out to leave while I was still asleep (those doors were made of solid oak with metal door jambs, and you could imagine how loud it would get). I would sometimes do the same to him and it was always a delight hearing him yell "Hey man, you got a problem?!?!" Many good memories from that year!
