I was a 72 year-old, disabled grandmother, now 73 years old. I am also a new resident South Dakotan. During July 2022 we had our roof replaced by Twin Cities Construction, LLC in Deadwood. Will James Storhaug was the primary and Jeffrey (Jeff) Mark Storhaug (dad) was his partner. Remember those names. They completed the roof July 15, 2022 and with the contract satisfied and Mr. Jeff Storhaug demanding immediate payment (also he was leaving for Arizona the following day for golf), we paid the remaining balance. The contract was satisfied. In September we received notice from Builders FirstSource a lien ($11,801.12) was being placed on our home for non-payment for the materials used on our roof. This debt quickly went to collections and we eventually ended up paying an additional $10,000 for satisfying the lien and its removal plus preserving our good credit. The following January, 2023 we filed a complaint with the Pennington County States Attorney Office. Shortly afterwards Investigator Salas left a voice message. I returned the call and Salas said, This is a civil matter and this office will not pursue this further. Click! We werent worth his explanation. Much has happened since. South Dakota Attorney General (consumer complaints) says the money stolen is a Class 4 felony. So, it appears Ms Lara Roetzel either doesnt know South Dakota codified law or there is something deeper. I (Connie Truninger) started asking questions. It turns out Ms Roetzel is very familiar with my partner. Wendy McGowan from the States Attorney Office prosecuted my partner in 1998. During the sentencing phase, Ms McGowan requested the stiffest penalties the law allowed and her co-prosecutor strongly insisted on a lengthy prison term. Thankfully, the judge saw differently, but a sentence was imposed. The co-prosecutor was visibly upset with the lighter sentence. Until I do ALL my homework, theres little to add, but I will confirm and verify before proceeding.
