Last month I went to Santander to request approval for my first loan. That morning I brought with me a copy of my credit score along with two weeks worth of paystubs from my job. Based on my appearence, Elizebeth Shippe denied me my loan and lied to me stating my screen wont let me advance, my system is down. She told me to come back at 3:30pm that afternoon to check back to see if we can continue but I did not attend the follow-up she suggested because it was clear to me from where I sat in her office that the systems were all working well out in the lobby by the bank teller, the office next to hers with the employees computers on and working fine and all the atms were on and fully operational including the drive-thru option. The old american standard of winning someone over to get approval for a loan based solely on what you wear upon the first meeting to make the first impression is old and clearly outdated. Elizebeth Shippe is not accepting of other walks-of-life in the area and I do not appreciate being lied to upon the first meeting either creating the first impression of Santander Bank a bad one. That day I wore my coat and buttons and kept my hair and beard long because this is a free country and she had difficulty looking me in the eye even with her glasses on to help her look at me and see clearly. The pictures of the people smiling hanging up on the bank doors advertising diversity are clearly false so please do me a favor and skip this branch for any inquiry.

I have a disabled adult child who relies on me entirely for all of their financial support. My child was attending a day program which was costing me $36 one way for an Uber so they could get to the program since I have to work full time. The state of Rhode Island agreed to reimburse me for a portion of the transportation expenses and issued a check from Santander Bank. They made the check out in my childs name because theyre an adult, so my personal bank would not allow me to deposit it, as they dont allow third party deposits. I took my adult child (who has a valid state ID card) to this Santander Bank to cash the check today and we were turned away and told they dont cash non-customer checks. The whole point of us going there was to have the check cashed at the bank it was drawn from; my child is not employed and does not have a bank account and also cannot be opening random bank accounts at various financial institutions that they wouldnt know how to manage. The teller stated that they dont allow us to cash a check from non customers no more and told us to go somewhere else or open an account. Let this be a lesson to anyone who may receive a check drawn from Santander and anyone even considering banking with them. This is a predatory and manipulative practice and we would never consider opening an account here on principal. I spoke to my mother in law about it when we got home (shes an existing Santander customer) and shes decided to close her account with them after this. Do better, Santander.
