University Club

Excellent food and full of interesting friendly people. A lovely experience.

Being a non-clubmember within a visiting group, I guess I should have lowered the bar. It was interesting the bouncer outside directed a group of seniors to the stairs, rather than offering the hidden elevator. We were directed to a room to the left of the entrance and directed to pick any table. A server was beginning to open the wine, and said she would come around. I chose the chardonnay. The next two times I wanted another glass, I had to get up and get it myself. Later, I wanted another glass when she came around, and I was told "we are out" of the Chardonnay. So I switched to the Savignon blanc. Okay. The salad greens were crisp and cold as they should be. We had a choice of three entrees, chicken, short ribs, or salmon. I selected the salmon. The fish portion, about half the size of my hand, was flavorful and perfectly cooked. I don't know if the rice was supposed to be flavorless and sticky, but if I got it on my pitching hand, an MLB umpire would have thrown me out with the 10-game suspension. Dessert was a belated plate of assorted cookies, undistinguished. I don't know, maybe I should have brought my yacht with me, but Providence never made me feel welcome, I always felt like an outsider. I have dined all over the world, and have resided in the New Orleans area since 1975, so this was not my first rodeo in a high end Club. Disappointing.
