After waiting 18 hours in a room, left alone and told by the nursing staff of 5 Main that no answers to my questions could be provided, I was given a full meal prior to scheduled abdominal surgery, denied my normal medication for depression, and given no effective prep for the surgery. After 18 hours with no prep, no answers and the abdominal surgery a few hours away I realized I was in unsafe hands. I stated my concern to a nurse and she said, "Well, health care isn't what it used to be ha ha." I asked for a self-discharge form and the nurses refused to show me the way to the elevator. A colleague of Dr. Serniak's stopped me as I was leaving, apologized for the solid food I had been given, apologized for forgetting the proper prep, and asked me to stay for the surgery. I did, but in the pre-op room Dr. Serniak angrily said he was afraid that after the experiences I "claimed to have had" I'd probably be "resentful" if something went wrong with the surgery and coldly stated that he was "refusing to give me care". First discharging myself, then being thrown out by the surgeon, I left after 24 hours in what I can only call a nightmare from the Twilight Zone. Good luck folks! BTW Nurse Janice is an angel, the only one. You have to decide whether to choose a surgeon whose credentials are impeccable even though as a human he has all the sensitivity and empathy of a chain saw.

Over the years, we have been involved with several hospitals (Binghamton, Johnson City, Rochester). The care at Guthrie/Packer has always been superior, from emergency room (wait time considerably less; highly skilled staff on hand) to surgery (our son's knee surgery went exceedingly well; years later he is running marathons regularly). The staff has always been kind and patient to us; the place is immaculate. We are happy we moved closer to Guthrie/Packer.

If we could give it ZERO stars we would. This is the absolutely WORST hospital experience we have EVER had!! Nursing staff is great, specialist no problem but the HOSPITALIST staff is SERIOUSLY LACKING. Won't order meds like they're supposed to(this is AFTER requesting a CURRENT med list from our primary), then wait until AFTER someone you can complain to has left for the day and then haul off and tell you that you have to take it up with the daytime doctor. That's NONSENSE!! 3 times my husband has had to THREATEN with an AMA to get anyone to listen to him. We ASKED for a psych consult and was told that they were calling only to find out it was NEVER done. Our "small town" treat patients better than this. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND not going here
