Academy Pittsburgh

Not an enormous fan. The idea is great, but the follow through is terrible. I had to fight like hell for reasonable accommodations. The cameras in my face while I was struggling to learn something entirely new didn't help either. All my time there really did was keep me busy during the craziest of Covid-19. Learning how to learn remotely has its perks too, I suppose. The course is great for those that have a strong background in CS - see the various CS major college drop outs that excel here - but it isn't taught well enough for novices. You're shown examples A and B and then asked to pull a rabbit out of a hat, without having anything concrete to reference, and come up with G to complete the very difficult problem. As a former educator, the style of teaching drove me up a wall. Frankly, it still does. Academy Pittsburgh did not provide me a strong path to the career switch that I thought it would. It just didn't.

Instructors and TAs are readily available and willing to help you. They're very encouraging, work hard to foster an inclusive and non-competitive class environment. The course covers a different subject every week, which can sometimes feel like skimming the surface. However, the curriculum is so well structured that even if you feel like you don't have enough practice with a concept one week, it will be used in later lessons that help you solidify your understanding while giving you context into other aspects of programming. Also, If you are not forced to stay at home by a pandemic the instructors will provide lots of snacks. Large network of alumni and 'friends' that are eager to get to know you, share resources and experiences. ISA funding option makes financial dive easier.

I can't even begin to explain how wonderful and life changing it has been to attend and graduate from Academy. John and Jean some of the best human beings I have ever met, and are even better instructors.

One of the best decisions of my life was attending Academy Pgh, they teach in a way that anyone can learn to code and really help you to get used to the way coding works. Having gone in with zero experience and found something I love to do is so great.
