The layout of the store is more like a house... a house that belonged to your eccentric uncle, whom you rarely saw but always liked. It's perpetually in a strange and dream-like state, slightly twisted, sometimes ghoulish. An art experiment with no coherence. Shopping here entails a tacit acceptance of the surreal and unsettling. You'll see people changing clothes, right in the open, with no shame or concern. A Svengali assortment of things bequeathed from an aunt's attic, a grandmother's basement, a child's bedroom that has been outgrown. Things that was once loved, but now want to be forgotten. All colliding and accumulating into a single place and time. Everything is slightly broken, dusty, chipped, damaged, but still functional. Ready for a second chance. Similarly, are the workers. A motley crew of misfits. The store attracts shoppers of a similar vibe. Those willing to dip their toe in the peculiar. Nothing about PAT can be fathomed. PAT is a staple of Queen's Village and brings with it a sense of community solidarity. You'll see people from all different walks of life here and transcends what a "store" can be. Philly Aids Thrift has become symbolic for political activism in support of LGBTQ rights and concerns. It's no wonder that this store is often swarmed with shoppers and generous donors. It's a commitment to an idea.
