Where to start? This school changed my life completely. Connections Academy can do wonders for a student (or possibly a family of students) currently in a traditional, brick-and-mortar setting that is not working out. I was a student at Connections Academy for 5 years. The things I've learned, the skills I've obtained, and the people that I worked with all culminate and make for an experience that I will take with me for the rest of my life. I learned communication skills that I can now use in the real world working as a Shift Leader and as a Behavioral Support Professional. Phone calls, e-mails, and meetings - fairly nontraditional communicative settings but vastly becoming a new societal norm / expectation far and wide. This setting doesn't come without its social challenges, though. While there are social opportunities available across the state, they are largely based in the south-central region and are hard to get to. The school can use a lot of assistance with social event coordination and planning for their students. For individuals that require a lot of social connections with their peers, it's important that their Learning Coach works closely to provide that for their student. Keep in mind the school is up-and-coming, and I feel that this will be less of an issue in years to come. Educationally, this school offers so many opportunities to its students. Without pursing my secondary education at REACH, I would not have been able to take Chinese, AP courses in my freshman year, medical courses, or even been able to graduate as soon as I did. It's important to note, though, that the curriculum is fairly rigorous and requires students to be diligent and hardworking. This is where communication comes in - it's key to your learner's success. Without informing your instructor of things that you need assistance in, you will likely struggle. They don't know you're struggling unless you reach out to them. An open line of communication is vital. Aside from that, there are also many extracurricular opportunities (believe it or not)! Thanks to this school, I was able to establish and run a GSA as well as other clubs. Administration is wonderful and they really work with their kids. It's unlikely you will find professionals as dedicated as these ones elsewhere! Jane Swan, the CEO, is one of the most down-to-earth individuals I've ever had the pleasure of working with. Rachel Parker, Director of Counseling, is another truly phenomenal individual I met as a consequence of being a student here. Bridget McDonald is incredibly dedicated as a school social worker. She is the type of person who loses sleep over her job just to make sure her students are in good health. Many of the other teachers are just as dedicated, and it makes for a truly one-of-a-kind experience. If you are considering changing educational careers, GO FOR IT, but keep in mind it is not for everyone. The only way to find out is to try. REACH is not a one-size-fits all school. They will work with you and accommodate your needs - something you don't find nowadays. Take advantage of this excellent resource. You can open yourself up to a WORLD of opportunity at this school. I believe it's growing student population just reflects that this school is doing something right. (A gain of nearly 1,000 students per year is almost unheard of but REACH is doing it!) I could talk for days about this school, but what's the point when you could just experience it yourself?! Thank you, REACH, for all that you have done for me as an individual and student. You're making a difference in PA families' lives, and that stands for something.
