What Mark is teaching my daughter, Tara, is more than playing the piano; he is teaching her a life skill: to understand the factors and parameters involved in a situation, to identify the problem, to explore solutions, and to move from one problem to another. Lessons with Mark are packed with playing skills, music theory, harmony, the history of music, and stories of his rich life experiences. Tara has learned from Mark a more efficient way of practicing; instead of repeating a passage repeatedly, identifying the problematic spots, finding the source of the problem, solving the problem, expanding the fluency to the neighboring measures, and moving on to the next problematic spot. Applying this method, Taras focus and intensity during her practice time have increased, and she is learning new and challenging pieces in a fraction of the time than before.

On Apr 8th, Aadhi, my 6 year old son, and I attended the Ten grand piano concert at Arlene Schnitzer hall where Gavin Nans performance inspired Aadhi to say that he wanted to play like him. Mark Westcott was Gavins teacher. We contacted him and explained what Aadhi said about playing like Gavin. Mark agreed to take Aadhi as his student. I strongly believe that this is a divine coincidence. Marks lessons are very well organized and expertly crafted for Aadhi. Mark tries out different methods and tailors his lessons and exercises for Aadhi which clearly shows committment, deep understanding of student's skill and need. Mark is patient, thoughtful and clear on his lessons, feedback, and expectations. Mark spends quality time with Aadhi on his scales, technique, reading, posture and rhythm. For a young student, Mark emphasized on the importance of musical environment for listening and working on problem area. It is always inspirational and educational to hear Mark explain the problem and solution with pedadgogical lessons. His classes go above and beyond for Aadhi and clearly shows that Mark is a virtuoso and an excellent teacher.

I have studied with Mark for many years, and all I can say is studying with Mark has been a transformative experience. His expertise and dedication have honed my piano skills while also imparting valuable life lessons that he learned from a lifetime of touring as a world-class concert musician. He emphasizes independence, good studying habits, musical literacy, and nurturing students to become confident performers through his monthly master classes.

I started studying with Mark in high school and he has remained a guiding force in my piano playing ever since. Not only was Mark a world-class pianist, but he is a dedicated and caring teacher. Very few possess his ability to combine a high level of knowledge and artistry with a successful pedagogical approach. I consider myself lucky to have studied with him!

I was lucky enough to start lessons with Mark in April 2022. My friends and other musicians are amazed at the progress I've made thus far, and all of this is due to Mark's brilliant teaching. I highly recommend him.
