If in David Douglas district unfortunately this school does not measure up to their standards. If looking to avoid Portland Public (good call) but Cherry Park has risen as the best elementary in Douglas. Unfortunately when looking at a school its needed to view through a lense of neighborhood which it resides. Which is a high crime area here. Sit at the bus stop right at the edge of the school and you see all you need to know. Count the syringes loitering the lawn. After doing so I hope it makes sense why my daughter is not a 3rd generation Scot. Why she won't attend the district my brother teaches in. A co parented child falls into this elementary as an option. Truth is that no matter how great the staff may be- given the option I choose to place my child where she doesn't risk falling through the cracks. Not all have this choice. I also have a child whose had an unusually rough first 5 years and it doesn't present with acting out. Given the resources of the school, experiences of other parents I would avoid putting any child who may need extra support here. She is currently at the 'summer camp' in the building. It was hard leaving her seeing how under staffed the program is. I may be an over protective Mother. My perspective on the summer program may not reflect the school. I still know this school well and ultimately I can't fathom feeling comfortable enrolling her in kindergarten with syringes in the playground. *my comments in no way reflect the capacity of the teachers (with enormous class sizes) *if enrolling your child please be aware of the drug/crime close by. Be comfortable explaining not to touch a syringe. Stranger danger. *remember drug use can begin young *be as involved as possible. In that way Douglas is a great district
