I took my first class at Elemental and cant wait to return. The environment is so welcoming and friendly, and I got such good instruction. I felt nervous at first, but my instructor put me at ease from the start. What a special community.

In my opinion, this studio is a hidden gem. The lack of reviews is not surprising. But the staff, education, and community that Elemental has cultivated and provides to students is phenomenal, and deserves more recognition. The cost of class is comparable to others here in PDX, and well worth it. You get access to the studio essentially as much as you want during your 8 weeks, and for an additional 4 weeks after the end of your course to finish work. They offer an array of beautiful glazes and clay bodys to choose from as well. Ceramics as a practice, in general, is beautiful and life altering. Its especially true when its taught by and with caring and knowledgeable individuals such as those here. Im beyond grateful for the time Ive had with Lindsey in Developing Your Passions, and the wonderful friends Ive made along the way. My craft, heart, and mind are better for it.

I signed up for this class and was hoping for it to help with healing and my brain injury. Then I became more sick and missed a couple classes. Then I was hit by a car as a pedestrian. So I asked for a partial refund. These classes are $550. I went to one before my health worsened and I was physically injured to the point of being unable to attend. Instead of allowing me a partial refund due to something that happened to me out of my control, the owner tried to guilt me for their inability to profit from me and I should care about them keeping the doors opened? This after telling me how they have a waitlist and are fully booked. So which is it? You're too broke to be a decent human and give me a partial refund? Or you're too greedy? The lack of empathy has filled me with so much anger. I think they are unaware of the consumer protection laws for situations just like this. I have contacted the state of Oregon and filed a formal complaint about this business. I have been a business owner for 15 years, I've always had a no refund policy. EXCEPT due to illness or injury because I'm not a monster. I paid for something I'm Unable to receive. I have zero interest in coming back to a class with a business owner who preaches wellness, unless your wellness impacts their profits. The "studio" is in an unfinished, unventilated basement. I highly doubt they're hurting for money. Clearly none of that money goes back into the studio. Go somewhere else, this business is gross and fake.

Business Response on Google Sep 13th, 2023
Ab left out two important details in her review that I would like to add and misrepresented my response to her regarding protecting the business. Number one, I offered Ab several weeks of studio access, equivalent to the class time she was missing due to her injury. I also offered her several one-on-one instruction sessions so she could learn the entire process of ceramics from throwing on a pottery wheel to trimming, decorating and having her work fired. My plan was to provide Ab with a weekly instruction session like we do during classes, but in a one-on-one format instead of a group. Two, I said she should take the time she needs to recover and to let me know when she is ready to return to the studio. Those are the two facts she left out of her review. She also paints our refund policy as one based on greed, which couldn’t be further from the truth. In my reply to her refund request, I explained why we do not offer refunds once a class has started. We limit our classes to seven students and once a class has started we cannot offer the spot to another student. Our policy clearly states that we only offer refunds with 10 days notice before a class begins. All students must agree to our refund policy when they register for a class. If I were to offer refunds after a class has started, even only in cases of illness or injury, the financial impact could be very significant for the studio, perhaps even leading to going out of business. Our 8 week classes are our primary source of revenue. Instead of a policy that could put the studio at a significant risk, I decided the best policy is one that gives students time in the studio equivalent to what they missed and one-on-one instruction, also equivalent to what they missed. Offering the one-on-one instruction time and access to the studio does cost us money, but it does not put the studio at the same risk as a policy to issue full or partial refunds in cases of illness or injury would. I care about our students very much and do want them to get the most for their money. I also have a responsibility to our employees, myself, and my family. I believe our policy is very fair and balances the needs of students, employees, and myself. Please contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions or feedback about our policy.
