I had the Barnes company do my taxes for my personal and business side for the past 3 years. After 3 years every year after they file my taxes I get several letters from IRS and department of revenue and city of Portland that I under paid them and because my estimates were not right amounts I pay large penalties. Several of these are the CPA's fault and I never held them responsible. I enter all the numbers into quick books so all they do is punch in numbers, make mistakes and charge me double to re run it. They are not creative in telling you how to save on taxes. They just simply don't care. I went to them having been referred to Dan as a CPA but I never even met him in 3 years, only saw Virginia. So I complained last week about mistakes and she wanted me to go in on Monday to meet her at 3:30 so she can explain better. When I went there they said oh we see you on her schedule but she left! This is how terrible the customer service was. No call to apologize. Maybe it was appropriate that Dan would want to see what happened but he didn't! So fed up with this bad service.

Quality Service All Around.Dan Barnes has completed my taxes for over a decade. He and his staff are always professional and looking out for my best interest. I receive a packet of information every year that among other things, includes tips on how tax laws have changed and how they may impact me. He also provides recommendations of the types of expenses and documentation I may want to include in order to obtain the lowest tax rate possible. If I have questions, his office responds promptly and thoroughly. Once I return my documentation to Dan's office, my tax return is completed and filed quickly. If I do not get my documentation to Dan's office prior to April 15, they automatically file an extension for me without me even needing to ask. Their service is stellar as is their preparation of tax returns. Dan and his staff always review my situation and finances carefully to ensure they take advantage of every tax law that may benefit me. In addition, he uses secure systems to make my completed tax return available to me immediately over the internet.I highly recommend Dan and his staff.

Don't waste your time! Look elsewhere.I met with Dan at his office in late February and provided him with my 2012 and 2013 Tax information. Upon leaving his office he gave the impression that my return should be pretty straight forward and that he would have the paperwork complete in about a weeks time. I sent him a follow up email the following week asking if he needed any additional paperwork from us and I got no response. I sent him another email the week after asking for an ETA and once again asked if he needed any additional information from me, still no response. Week 3 we left a voicemail with his office admin and still did not receive a call back or reply via email. To make matters worse, the person who answered the phone was quite rude and reminded us that it was a "month before the tax deadline, what do you expect?". I finally went in person to his office (without an appointment) to ask about the status of our return. He pulled out the paperwork and notified me that he needed some addtional info for our child expenses and some info for stocks I had sold that year. Really? Why didn't you mention that earlier, you know...when I emailed you once a week asking if you needed anything else? Or why not pickup the phone and return a call? When confronted about the lack of response to my emails and phone message, he was rude and once again stated that it was "only a month before the deadline" what did I expect?!? Seriously? Who operates a business like that? Regardless, I provided him with the information he requested within 30 minutes of leaving his office. Another week went by, still not a word. I sent a follow up email the following week, you guessed it...NO RESPONSE. Over a month has gone by since I met with him in person and turned in my paperwork when we receive an actual email from Dan. Exciting right?? nope...he was asking for basic information which had already been answered by us (more than once) at our initial meetings and via email. Unbelievable. Finally when confronting him via email about this, he stated that he no longer felt comfortable handling our return and mailed our paperwork back to us with two weeks left before the deadline. Extremely unprofessional!  I highly recommend you stay away from this CPA and take your taxes elsewhere.
