I was Karen's involuntary client for ten years. I never would have been her client willingly. And it has taken me ten more years to really understand the damage that a "dual relationship" can do.
A dual relationship is when a therapist or counsellor uses a family member as a client. This would still be ethically problematic even with the "client's" enthusiastic consent, and I never gave it. Not at 19 when it began, and not at 29 when I ended it.
