I really don't even want to give one star! On January 9th, we discovered a small amount of water on our basement floor. Less than 1" deep. We had used Roto Rooter before so we called them. It was determined that a cap on a pipe from our toilet down the basement had broken. That was repaired along with checking the main line for clogs. That work cost us $979.50. When that was completed, another technician reviewed paperwork with us to get rid of the water. The technician asked if we had homeowners insurance which we do. He asked how much our insurance company would pay on the claim. I thought that was a little strange. He reviewed paperwork that indicated that the work could cost between $5,000 to $10,000 but could be higher if extra work was required. In our mind, we never dreamed that the cost would be more than $5,000.00 considering that the water was less than 1" deep and it was not covering the entire floor. We were able to determine the depth of the water was less than 1" deep because the pieces of Styrofoam used to put under objects only measures 1" in height. We know that the water did not cover the entire floor because there were several items that were not moved from their original location. So, you can imagine how shocked we were to get an invoice for $17,253.44. If you divide that amount by 7 days, it equals $2,464 per day. There was 2 days when no one from Roto Rooter came. We had to call them to see if anyone was going to come to review how things were going. We were told that no technician would be coming because it was their day off. Also, in that 7 day period, the only person to come was a technician to check the dampness/moisture content and he was here less than 1/2 hour. So what were we paying for at rate of $2,464 per day. I guess were paying for listening to the fans blow! We also questioned whether 22 fans was required for which we were charged $4,004.00. We were also charged $1,000.40 for 2 negative fans, and $2,476.80 for 3 dehumidifiers. The claim was sent to our homeowners insurance company. They had a third party independent agency to review the charges to determine if they were fair and reasonable. Based on their review, it was determined that an amount of $9,248.00 was reasonable. We added our $1,000.00 deductible and sent Roto Rooter a check for $10,248.00. We think this is fair. Roto Rooter does not agree. We offered to pay an additional $2,000.00. Roto Rooter would not accept our offer and is demanding that we pay the balance. This is very difficult for us as our only source of income is Social Security. The lady at Roto Rooter thinks that our insurance company is being fraudulent in what they paid and has suggested that we contact The Ohio Department of Insurance and file a complaint. We are still battling with Roto Rooter and they have now put a mechanics lien on our property. Bottom Line, we cannot recommend Roto Rooter. If you consider using them, do not let them proceed without giving you a itemized quote for you to review and approve.
