My sister recently died of cancer. I had concerns of her care, and left a message with her nurse to call me. Her primary hospice nurse was Erin. I was assured by the nurse I spoke with that Erin would call me back. She never did. In fact, no hospice nurse had come to see her at her home in 5 days. The 5th day she passed.

My father was a patient last month with starting home hospice then my father suddenly required inpatient hospice care for symptom management of pain, confusion and agitation. I am a hospice nurse from another state and was in daily contact with staff for updates, my brother was the primary decision maker and 1st contact since he lives here in Ohio. The nursing staff was very good with communication and care including triage, on-call, home visits and inpatient nurses. That being said I am very dissatisfied that on the day of his passing I spoke with his nurse in the morning who indicated he condition worsened. At no point was I told he may pass that day and my brother should have been called to come to be with him. I know it can be difficult to predict when someone is imminent and exact time of death yet my brother should have been called to be by his side for he did pass that day and my brother is very sad he was not given the opportunity to be with him to say goodbye.

First impressions matter when choosing a hospice company. I called to speak to a liason on behalf of my mom a Cleveland Clinic pt. The lady who answered the phone lacked empathy and had no customer service whatsoever. 6 hours ago she told me, Our staff is very busy they will call you back when they can (unprofessional response). I still haven't recieved a call back regarding my mom. I called another hospice company who responded promptly (within an hour) and with compassion who we will move forward with.

Our family member enrolled in Cleveland Clinic Hospice very recently (Spring 2023) and had such a WONDERFUL experience I cannot say enough good things. First, the intake was in the home, which I'm sure is to be expected but nonetheless was comforting to our family member. Second, the intake personnel was very thorough, kind, compassionate, and created a personal care plan that was implemented immediately. Third, the visiting hospice nurse came to do the first home visit 24hrs later found our family member to be in extremis and was able to help coordinate a direct admission to the local hospital for crisis management. Subsequently, our family member required a procedure that required a special supply item for post-procedure care; the supply item was able to be procured without difficulty. Our family member was subsequently moved into a local nursing home for long-term care (LTC) in partnership with the Cleveland Clinic Hospice, who was present at the facility within an hour of our loved one's arrival to ensure a smooth transition of care. The entire Hospice care team was able to provide the utmost timely and compassionate care to our family member: the wonderful health aide came for bathing/dressing and looked so cared for afterwards, the nurse came to do the required periodic procedure and provided physical and emotional support, the social worker returned earlier than expected for a bedside/emotional support visit, the chaplain was as wonderful as you would expect, and the physician was adept at listening and creating a reasonable/practical care plan. A massage/therapeutic touch therapist was even offered. Additionally, all Hospice staff worked seamlessly with the LTC staff, were responsive to the after hours on-call system, and came to bedside to assist the LTC staff as our loved one declined further. I would recommend Cleveland Clinic Hospice to anyone looking for exceptional multidisciplinary care in their final months/weeks/days.
