Normally, on the road, I avoid chain stores and try to keep my business to local owned/operated places in the interest of supporting the local economy. Often perfectly willing to pay a little more. The key word there being little. Unfortunately, in this town, the local stores charge double or better on common life items. The term gouging comes to mind. If you're visiting, you may want to stick to national chain stores. Otherwise, you'll leave broker than you came.
