Established in 1921, the Veterans Bureau responded to the post-World War I needs of North Carolina veterans by setting up two sub-district offices. One found its home in the historic Charlotte Mint and Assay Building, utilizing its 1837 structure rent-free. The second office operated in Raleigh, leased for $1,740 annually. A notable facility in Asheville, once a U.S. Army hospital, catered to tuberculosis patients. Initially focusing on advising veterans and aiding in applications, the offices evolved with administrative reforms in the mid-1920s. Frank T. Hines, the bureau's second director, led a transition that closed sub-district and district offices, consolidating functions into regional offices. In 1940, the Charlotte Regional Office moved to Fayetteville but returned to Charlotte in 1945, securing temporary quarters in Winston-Salem's tobacco warehouse. Despite the possibility of relocating back to Charlotte in 1946, the Regional Office signed a lease for the Nissen Building in Winston-Salem, its headquarters until 1974. Subsequent moves within downtown Winston-Salem led to the current residence in the Hiram H. Ward Federal Building since 1974, with additional off-site locations at Fort Bragg and Camp Lejeune. In 2021, the North Carolina Regional Office celebrated its 100th year of service to veterans and the 75th anniversary of its move to Winston-Salem.

It's a federal building. The security theater is on average with other supposedly "secure" places. The security staff was polite and very professional. The ladt at the VA office was amazing! She was genuinely happy to be there and to help this veteran get what he needed done.
