Nightmare Before Christmas Cabin- 2020
Booking a quiet cabin Christmas seemed like the perfect way to spend an isolated holiday in 2020. However, things certainly did not turn out how we had hoped. The entry code we were sent did not work to enter the cabin, so we called the number on the email. The property manager stated she had parted ways with this cabin owner about a year ago, but is still getting numerous calls, as she has still not been taken off the contact info. We apologized for bothering her, and called the owner, who gave a new code, which worked. We entered the cabin as it was getting dark. We smelled an overpowering air freshener smell, and noticed more than several scented plug-ins all around the cabin. This really bothered our breathing, so we unplugged them, to soon discover they were likely there to mask the smell that seemed to be coming from the sofa. It smelled like filthy, wet dog. We began looking around further, and noticed dog hair on the rugs, and it became clear even a simple vacuum had not been done prior to our arrival. The same dog hair was even on the bath towels hanging in the master bath. There was soap scum all over the guest shower glass door, the kind that builds up over a long time, not just from one guest. There were cobwebs all over the cabin, indicating a deep clean had not been done on this property in quite some time. As an important side note: the wifi cannot be used to stream, and the TV only gets channels by free air signal ("rabbit ear" type signal) and only gets 1 major network, ABC. It became really clear that just having the cleaning staff come back for a quick touchup was not going to solve the lack-of-cleanliness issue, and it was pretty late (1am) by the time we made up our minds. We found other lodging and left. If you read any negative reviews on this listing, you will see that the owner seems to blame the guest, and I did see that ahead of time, but I am an optimistic person, and thought maybe it was just a fluke. Nope, sadly, this is the same thing that happened to us. We contacted the owner and not only was there no apology for ruining our holiday plans, we were blamed for the "situation" we put them in?! To this date we have received ZERO dollars back from this owner, even under these outrageously unacceptable circumstances. We left a poor review on VRBO, where we booked, and the only response we got was a poor review of us, as guests. That's ok with us, because after this horrible experience, we won't be using VRBO again, anyway. We had to pay for alternative lodging, the week of Christmas, and were lucky to find something else. To say that we would NOT recommend this cabin would be the understatement of the year.
