Sandy Mush Herb Nursery is one of my favorite places. Explore the green houses as they stretch up the side of the mountain and roam the terraced gardens. They have a great selection of herbs, perennials, native plants and the like. Call ahead! The road is much improved now which means all kinds of cars can get there....

My wife couldn't believe that a nursery could be at the top of this mountain, but I drove her up to get some Soapwort, that was no longer being stocked by our local garden centers. We were greeted by the welcoming crew of friendly canine's, who wagged not just their tails, but their whole bodies! Fairman came up on his ATV to meet us, and went back to bring his sweet wife Kate, to escort us to the designated greenhouse. When he told us to have a look around, I did just that, and entered the house with all of their overwintering flowers and tropical plants. My eyes thought they were playing tricks when I looked at a giant mother Clivia, that was surrounded by gorgeous blooming offspring! He later told me that the mother plant was approximately 50 years old! Not far from the massive Clivia were two arboretum showpieces in another adjacent room. There stood two of the most spectacular Bird of Paradise plants I had ever seen in my lifetime! These had been thriving and blooming for more than 40 years! I wanted to stay longer and flood them with questions, but my wife was becoming impatient. We got our Soapwort babies and left for our Outback. It was a delightful visit that I will never forget on this cool upper 40's mountain day!

Absolutely one of the most amazing selections of herbs, etc. That I've seen...coast to coast. Highly recommend, and also recommend having an SUV/4x4 or you'll be walking in.

When you get up to the nursery, it's like you've crossed over into another dimension. It is just so peaceful and you are surrounded by nothing but nature. The owners are so knowledgeable and so friendly. And they have many plants that you can't find at our regular nurseries. I always hate to leave from up there. I hope they will be around for many, many more years to come. It's just such a peaceful getaway.
