We've been to multiple doctors for the last 5 months in an effort to get my partner, Bill, diagnosed and treated...and nobody would take the time to listen. They either dismissed his symptoms as "depression" or "anxiety," or they didn't order the right tests to discover the cancer, the type of cancer, or where it had spread. This includes doctors at the illustrious and over-hyped Duke Cancer Center. Dr. Jayaram was the first doctor who actually gave me hope for the first time because he listened to us and agreed that palliative medication was needed--no other doctor was listening to my partner's symptoms--severe weight loss, shortness of breath, inability to sleep, swollen and painful lumps on his body. All I wanted while we were waiting for an accurate diagnosis and treatment was to see my partner have a better quality of life. It should not have taken 5 months of watching him decline to get someone to listen. Not only that, but we have some hope that this cancer can be treated to some degree...maybe not cured, but treated, and that's more hope than we had before. Don't dismiss SMOC because they are not "Duke" or some other major hospital. Smaller places like this have better staff than what I saw at Duke. I am just sad that I didn't come here sooner. **Updated 5/15...my partner ended up having small cell lung cancer, and he was a non-smoker. Most doctors want to try and cure patients, no matter what the cost, but Dr. Jayaram told us the truth and spared my partner from undergoing aggressive treatment in which the side effects were not worth it. Literally 5 days after the doctor told us that he didn't recommend treatment and that we should opt for hospice care, my partner died...at home in his bed. I am glad that he was not in a hospital, with tubes stuck in him. Many people don't know that Medicare will cover at-home hospice care 100%. We were given pain medication, nurses came to monitor Bill, and a health aide even came to give him a bath. When he passed, they even called the funeral home and they came out within 20 minutes. Small cell lung cancer is no joke. It's aggressive and spreads quickly. By the time it's diagnosed, it's often in an advanced stage. Screening for it really doesn't happen if a person is a non-smoker. Hopefully, they will find a way to cure it some day....RIP William James Fricke--May 20, 1959-May 9, 2023.
